Two sisters inherit an old run-down house from an estranged Uncle, how could that go wrong? Sometimes it’s not the raggedy old building that is the problem, rather what’s inside.

We Have an Inheritance

We open the issue meeting sisters Chloe & Jan in a café. Chloe is the more irresponsible of the two and her life seems to be falling apart. Jan then gives Chloe an envelope and tells her they have inherited Uncle Max’s cottage in Cornwall. Chloe then starts to daydream of the change in fortune.

Upon showing up at the cottage the girls find out that it’s an old, dilapidated building with a lot of junk in it. Amongst the objects in the house is an old music box that appears to be broken but is doing strange things. After some discussion of what to do the girls decide to sell everything online.

Chloe’s luck turns and her life seems to start fixing itself. The girls get a generous offer for the junk in the house. But is everything too good to be true?

Can You Trust the Strange Man?

Ghostbox #1 is a slow burn with a lot of great world building. Mike Carey does an excellent job of showing you who our main characters are and what makes them tick. The issue does bog down a little in the middle but recovers with a great cliffhanger ending that sets the tone for the series to come.

The art in this issue is off the chain and very cool. The team of Pablo Raimondi & Jose Villarrubia makes the world come to life. The contemporary art style with a great mix of pastel and earthy colors makes the art next level.

Final Thoughts

Ghostbox #1 is a good base to build off for the series to come. The first issue makes you care about the main characters and their plight. The ending of the issue turns up the heat and gives an awesome cliffhanger to build on. This book is one that you should definitely give a read and keep your eyes on going forward.

Final Grade: 8/10
