Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3:
Leonardo has traveled the globe in search of his inner peace, which he may have finally found amongst familiar faces in a remote area. He has taken to protecting turtles who come ashore from poachers and connecting with his inner-self. Will it be enough to keep him from being found by the same clan that has terrorized his family, or is the search for peace a never-ending journey?
Creative Team:
Writer: Jason Aaron
Art and Colors: Cliff Chiang
Letters: Shawn Lee
Cover: Cliff Chiang
The Artwork:
Cliff starts the fantastic journey into issue #3 with perhaps my favorite cover so far. He leans into the Japanese influences and showcases Leonardo turning his back on his beloved weapon towards the sunset. Inside the pages he paints a serene island of peace and quiet. Leo has found a new home amongst turtles who wish to come ashore and lay their eggs and return to the seas.
Regarding the fight sequences against the poachers and later the clan who finds him, we get more fantastic and smooth transitions as Leo uses his weapon as an extension of himself. The colors are bright against the mainly nighttime setting created in this issue. You can feel what Leo is thinking as Cliff uses the shadows and colors to make him expressive and stoic. Shawn continues to help craft the intense sequences through his letters and paint a soft voice for Leo complimenting Cliff perfectly.
The Story:
While the first two issues brought chaos and angst, this issue gives us an almost calming sensation. Leo does not come across as angry for the most part, and it is a welcome contrast. Jason has built up our heroes beautifully and brokenly, making the reader empathize with and see everyone’s point of view.
Overall: 10/10
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3 brings us to the eye of the storm that our turtles are finding themselves in. Much like the eye of a hurricane, it moves quickly as the ending brings more chaos and sets us up with a grand reunion, moving this story forward. If you are not reading this story monthly, you may just be missing out on one of the best stories about our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
