New York Comic Con kicked off its’ 2024 edition with much anticipation behind it. The Pop culture event has been a staple of news and excitement since 2006. This year, the first day wasted little time delivering MUCH for the fandoms to savor and talk about.

Let’s take a recap of a strong Day 1!

“THE PENGUIN” kicked the day off with a star studded affair. Colin Farrell (Oz Cobb), Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone), and Rhenzy Feliz (Victor Aguilar) and the cast of “The Batman” gave fans a mid season trailer. This only excited a fanbase coming off of one of this TV seasons’ strongest episodes.

Apple TV+ debuted their panel for “Shrinking”. The show featuring Jason Segel and Harrison Fordhad a very packed house for their featured moment. For a deeper dive into events there, check out Tom from NI TV Talk’s review!

Marvel Comics has had the reputation of being the “Kings of NYCC” and wasn’t about to be upstaged on Day 1. They led off the comic book news with their highly anticipated “Next Big Thing” Panel. With C.B. Cebulski (Editor In Chief), Tom Brevoort (Editor extradinaire), Stephanie Phillips (“Phoenix”, “Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider”) and Ryan North (“Fantastic Four”). Chris Condon was introduced but wasn’t assigned with a title. That didn’t last long as the panel started off with his new assignment.

DON’T MISS THE NYCC PREVIEW EDITION!

Dropping in January 2025, Condon will be writing ULTIMATE WOLVERINE (w/ Alessandro Cappuccio on art). This comes off the heels of ULTIMATE UNIVERSE: ONE YEAR IN which hits stores in December. From here, the talk went to the X-Universe. Breaking down her series, Phillips teased the audience with plans for Jean Grey and her next space adventures. Brevoort chimed in with more X news pertaining to a storyline building since “From the Ashes” began. “The Road to Greymalkin” will be a crossover between the two main X-Men teams starting in December.

Along with announcements of “Timeless” and a new “Astonishing Infinity comics”, Ryan North brought the house down with RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM. The February series (w/art by R.B. Silva) gives readers more insight into the “One Nation Under Doom” announced in the fall out of 2024’s monster event “Blood Hunt”.

Massive-Verse Panel @ NYCC

Marvel wasn’t the only comic panel making waves at NYCC. The Radiant Black-led “Massive-Verse” from Image Comics and Black Market Narrative addressed fans in the wake of “The Catalyst War” conclusion. Kyle Higgins (“Radiant Black”) gave fans in attendance a great 101 into “comics’ most exciting Universe”. Along for the ride was Ryan Parrott (“Rogue Sun”), Rod Reis (“C.O.W.L. 1964”), Mat Groom (“Inferno Girl Red”) and Geraldo Borges (“Who Is No/One)”.

If anyone wasn’t familiar with these books, Higgins and company broke down each character and story along with giving BIG news for longtime fans. Radiant Black returns in February with permanent repercussions. Higgins also mentioned that Josh Keaton has been casted in an undisclosed role for the audio book of the series forthcoming.

THE END OF THE CATALYST WAR!

Fans also witnessed a new character (sort of) being added into the Rogue Sun lore. Parrott revealed a new Rogue Sun will join the fray and long time readers will be excited to see who is behind an armor now. C.O.W.L 1964 and Inferno Girl Red showed off some new art via Reis and Groom respectively.

One moment took readers attention and got a very big reaction. During the No/One update from Borges and Higgins, it was revealed the original idea behind No One was a Batman story Higgins was working on with the late Tim Sale. The saga of the Accountability Killer is releasing its’ TPB in November of 2024 with a featured film directed by Higgins in the works. More will be announced on a special November 18th on Black market Narrative’s YouTube channel. I’ve said it once and say it again: Get on board with the Massive-Verse now because it continues to re-define what the modern superhero mold is.

Dragon-Ball: DAIMA panel @ NYCC – Glorio

Other notable events featured Batman in a new light. The sequel to “Batman Ninja” along with “Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios” made a first impression on the Bat fanbase. “DC’s Gotham City” panel teased what’s forthcoming in the hometown of the Caped Crusader. It served as a great set-up for the “Absolute/All In” panel on Friday.

Dragon-Ball: DAIMA gave a lot of information about the new DLC for “Sparking Zero”. The panel unveiled Aaron Dismuke (Full Metal Alchemist, Kaiju No 8, Blue Lock) is joining DBD as the English VA for Glorio!

With Kid Cudi, Kyle Higgins and Marco Locati holding court about their hit series for Image Comics, “Moon Man”, Day 1 gave NYCC attendees one hell of a first impression.

And there’s still 3 more days to go.
