The Writing

John Layman kicks off this new arc with a slow-burn approach, focusing on the Titans’ place in a shifting landscape. The friction between the Titans and the Justice League is palpable, setting up what could be a long-term rivalry. The dialogue is sharp, capturing the unease and distrust simmering between the teams. Layman skillfully teases the future while allowing the emotional weight of the Waller incident to linger. While this issue is heavy on setup, it lays a promising foundation for what’s to come. However, the slow pacing may leave some readers craving more immediate action or development.

Art, Colors and Layouts:

Pete Woods delivers a visually engaging issue, especially with the introduction of a Tamaranean beast whose design is striking and unique. The way Woods captures the creature’s interaction with the Justice League’s space station makes the action feel believable in this sci-fi setting. The escalation of tensions between the Titans and the Justice League is reinforced through expressive character work, with subtle facial cues and body language that convey growing unease.

The scenes at Titans Tower are where the art truly shines. Woods’ use of flashbacks—highlighted by a fuzzy, single-color panel design—effectively conveys the characters’ internal struggles. These visual choices make it clear when we’re inside a character’s head, helping readers follow the psychological depth of the issue. The transitions between present events and these haunting flashbacks are seamless, and the color palette intensifies the emotional resonance of these moments.

Wes Abbott’s lettering is solid, supporting the story without being intrusive. His work ensures that the tone and pacing of conversations flow naturally, particularly in the more tense exchanges between the Titans and Justice League. The lettering choices during the flashback sequences also help emphasize the characters’ emotional states, further enhancing the reading experience.

Final Thoughts

Titans #16 sets the stage for an intriguing new direction, but the slow pacing may frustrate readers expecting more immediate payoff. The art and visual storytelling from Pete Woods, especially in the flashback sequences, elevate the issue and deepen the emotional stakes. Layman’s writing keeps you hooked on the evolving dynamics between the teams, promising a deeper exploration of their post-Waller world. This issue may not be action-packed, but it does offer a compelling setup for what’s to come.
