Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the 2nd issue in the Battle of Jakku: Insurgency Rising series from Alex Segura & Marvel!

Things continue to build up at the start of this new series. There are a few interesting plot points, but I sincerely hope things pick up quickly. Because I really dig the storylines they’re starting with, but I’d like to see the action pick up here.

This issue feels like a bit of a repeat of the first one in that it’s setting up what’s to come in the upcoming issues down the road. It’s very apparent that this isn’t going to be a narrow focused story, and with all of the plot lines being introduced it’s going to be quite extensive.

The main focus of the issue, is split between the New Republic (formerly the Rebel Alliance) and the Empire. The New Republic is working to eradicate what remains of the Empire. Meanwhile the Empire is just trying to regroup and maintain their control over the galaxy. It’s honestly a little difficult to see where this series is going, beyond the obvious battle at Jakku. The Battle of Jakku is of course the final battle that defeats the Empire as we know it from the original trilogy films once and for all.

Like I said before, the issue does have some promise. And it’s clearly setting up for a massive story. But the slow burn is really hurting the overall appeal I have for the series thus far. So far we’re in the second issue and it isn’t until the final pages that we start to see some action and movement with the overall plot. Hopefully next issue picks up the pace.

FINAL POINT: The slow start this issue has started with is really hurting this issue and the series overall. While I’m sure the series is going to be great by the end, it’s hard to get excited for the next issue with things starting as slowly as they are. But there is promise with the last few pages showing a pick up in pace. If you’re a diehard Star Wars fan, you’re going to pick this up. But if you’re not, you might want to wait in all honesty. The first two issues are good, but they haven’t blown me away. So for the casual fans, I recommend waiting for the third issue to see how things go before jumping in full tilt.

SCORE: 6.5 out of 10
