Mystique

Since the fall of Krakoa, Mystique has been a busy mutant. More recently, she sent a group of high trained assassins on a wild goose chase for the mutant, Sabretooth. But turns out, she was Sabretooth all along and she was just looking for get information from Maverick about a device called Protozoa. In the usual mysterious fashion of Mystique, she doesn’t say what she needs it for.

Meanwhile, Nick Fury Jr., who has a comfortable job at S.H.I.E.L.D. in Mutant Tactics, was contacted by his father. Nick Fury Sr. has information about a certain mutant that he thinks his son will be very interested in. The only catch is that Nick Fury Jr. must act on it immediately. While Fury Jr. says he will act as he feels is appropriate, after seeing the information, he has no choice but to take action again the mutant terrorist, Mystique.

The Writing

Mystique #1 was a really strong first installment in this solo miniseries. It felt very authentic to the character but with a rogue element in this comic with an espionage feel to it. It’s interesting to see her doing whatever she needs to do to fulfill her plans, destroying whoever gets in her way with no accountability taken. The story is very compelling and does an excellent job at keeping you hooked into each page.

The Art

I enjoyed the artwork of Mystique #1 as its grittiness matched the tone of the comic perfectly. What showcased the artists talent the most is when Mystique changed into several different characters. The drawing style is quite different than anything that’s come out of the From The Ashes era, and I think the story benefited greatly from it.
