The Story:
Captain America and his Emergency Response Squad are called to a small town in Massachusetts when ghost apes begin terrorizing the town! Meanwhile, members of the team share some time bonding back at Avengers Mansion.
The Writing:
Steve Orlando does a wonderful job here showing this team of AVENG.E.R.S. as a group of people with a rich history and knowledge of each other. The dialogue between Hawkeye and Night Thrasher is a real stand out as the two bicker back and forth during intense moments. Orlando also does a wonderful job showing the younger, new members and their interactions with veteran Avengers. I am also impressed with the ability to make these characters stand out and seem like their own individual people. In short, each of these heroes act in a way that a long time reader would expect them to act.
The Art:
The artwork in this issue was top tier. From heroes lounging while watching a movie to ghost apes rampaging through a small town, every panel looked fantastic. The wonderful nod to ’90’s comics with Night Thrasher’s team jackets was a real treat. There are excellent action poses and great flow throughout. Of course, the cover is amazing! I love seeing Leinil Francis Yu’s artwork, Red Ghost has never looked this good!
The Verdict: 9/10
The villain of the month style of story telling combined with a behind the scenes plot and stellar visuals make this book another win for this creative team! The inclusion of the classic villain, Red Ghost was a wonderful addition to this story. If they continue with this trend this book may be something special!
