Jean Grey has been tirelessly trying to right the wrongs that Phoenix did by saving whoever she can in the universe. While she hasn’t cut herself a break, she certainly needs one. That’s when Carol Danvers answers that call to action and gives Jean the break she deserves, as well as the heart to heart she needs.
Carol brings Jean to a festival celebrating the Kree/Skrull alliance to have the time of her life and let her let loose just a little. Of course, Carol can relate to Jean more than Jean realizes and can empathize with her drive to make the universe a safer place. Carol assures her that that is Jean is afraid of Phoenix, then she truly isn’t in control.
While Jean is actually letting herself have fun at the festival, the Galactic Council are meeting to discuss her. Gladiator is hell-bent on it being a necessity to have control over Jean, but the Council disagrees as she hasn’t posed a threat. To everyone’s surprise, a familiar face joins the meeting to prove why Gladiator is right.
Jean is having the time of her life, when she’s interrupted by a voice demanding her attention. It’s none other than Gorr the God Butcher who’s made it his mission to take down Jean Grey.
The Writing
Something I really love about the Phoenix run is that there’s so many moving parts throughout the comics. With so much going on, you’d think that it would be messy but that’s just not the case. Stephanie Phillips does a fantastic job at fitting everything perfectly into the story while keeping Jean the main focus. Phoenix #4 was another excellent installment in the run and makes me very excited to see what’s next.
The Art
I felt the art style perfectly complemented the comic’s tone. The vibrant colors of Jean and the Phoenix Force brought even more depth to an already powerful narrative. My favorite moments were whenever Jean tapped into the Phoenix Force. She was illustrated and colored so beautifully that she truly felt like a cosmic entity. Another part I really appreciated what the festival with Carol Danvers and Jean. The colors were simply beautiful and made you feel yourself that you were letting loose with Jean.
