This review was made possible by advance screeners of The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 3. The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 3 premieres on Prime Video on Thursday, October 3rd with three episodes, with three episodes being released each Thursday until October 24th.
Everything is at stake in the long-awaited Season Three of The Legend of Vox Machina. The Chroma Conclave’s path of destruction spreads like wildfire while the Cinder King hunts down Vox Machina. Our lovable band of misfits must rise above inner (and outer) demons to try and save their loved ones, Tal’Dorei, and all of Exandria.
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 is a wild ride, one full of thrills, violence, love, and loss. The characters and their interactions take this show from a silly and fun adult animated show to a well rounded character study (that also happens to be a crazy amount of fun)! The action is ramped up this season to nail-biting levels. More than once I found myself yelling at the screen in a moment of triumph or loss. On top of the incredible action, the emotion and vulnerability of display was beautiful. I felt the loss when the team felt loss and I felt the joy when the team succeeded in an impossible task.
ASSEMBLE YOUR PARTY
The cast is made up of Laura Bailey (The Last of Us: Part II), Taliesin Jaffe (World of Warcraft), Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us), Matthew Mercer (Baldur’s Gate 3), Liam O’Brien (Marvel’s Avengers), Marisha Ray (Fallout 76), Sam Riegel (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and Travis Willingham (Marvel’s Avengers).
As I said above, the characters elevate this show to much higher heights than one would think by simply looking at the posters. This cast is full of veteran voice actors that have honed their craft to perfection. It helps that the main group of actors have been with these characters for so long, not just in two previous seasons of streaming television, but for years playing them on Critical Role.
The supporting characters are handled by veterans such as the late great Lance Reddick, Stephanie Beatriz, Grey Griffin and Kelly Hu. These performances helped to elevate the story and the main cast by bringing depth and emotion, even to characters with very limited screen time.
THE ANIMATION
The mix of mediums worked incredibly well, as it has in the previous seasons. Having the larger threats be a more 3D animated effect helped make them stand out and seem even more imposing. This helped the action scenes become more epic and memorable. The standard animation that has been used in the previous seasons remains just as polished and beautiful as always. Blood and gore has never looked this great in any animated project before. The animation has weight and a visceral real quality leading the more violent moments to be more impactful.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This is the best season of an already incredible show. Each character gets their chance to grow and shine as they go on a journey of inner growth and desperation. Their is real human emotion on display in this fantastical, animated world. The cast and crew have really outdone themselves this time and will have a hard time topping what they accomplished this season. However, since I have been more impressed each time they take us on a journey with Vox Machina, I have no doubt that the best is still yet to come!
