Last night, a young mutant named Shay was killed. Kamala plans a memorial service with the community to pay respects to Shay. It was nice seeing the mutants come together for their fallen brother, even though some were there begrudgingly. The mutants all gather together to speak for the loss of Shay when two mysterious mutants turn up to the service.
Anole recognizes one of them as Caliban but is confused as to why they’re there. “What is he?” “Mutant!” is what comes from the mysterious mutants mouths and they leave just as swiftly as they came. Anole follows the mutants to get some context as to why they were there and ends up following them to the sewers. He’s greeted by the mutants and asked to remove his human clothes, as he’s among friends now. He is welcomed by the mutants as they introduce themselves as the Morlocks.
Meanwhile, Kamala and Sophie are still at the memorial service when Kamala is questioned by her brother and cousin as to why she’s there. They’re worried because they heard there was an illegal mutant gathering and didn’t expect to see their family member there. Of course, they’re acting out of care for Kamala but present company isn’t appreciative of their concern or their judgement against the mutants. Sophie isn’t pleased with two humans interrupting their ceremony to judge them for mourning, which is fair. After Sophie scares them off, she realizes that they were the least of her concerns. The Truthseekers are on their way, armed and ready to cause a mutant massacre.
Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly did a really great job at showing the mutants constant struggles with simply trying to live their lives. The fact that they can’t even have a memorial service for a fallen mutant without it being deemed illegal and attacked on hits hard. Something I really appreciate is how well the characters are written, like Kamala or Laura, especially in these circumstances. Kamala, the usually ever so positive is showing signs of her spirit breaking given the circumstances of the story. It’s relatable and written in a way that gives it unbelievable depth. But what else can you expect from Lanzing and Kelly?
The Art
Yet again, the artists created something beautiful here with their use of darker aesthetics and brightly colored characters. The Morlocks looked fantastic with each character having their own unique look giving them the chance to shine in their own right. My favorite part of the comic was seeing the powerset of Laura and Sophie being used during the fight against the Truthseekers. The creative way their powers were shown made each page look larger than life.
Final Thoughts
I love where this is going with the NYX run so far. It’s interesting to see Kamala have to experience the bigotry of humans while still trying to be her usually wholesome and kind self. The comic ended on a very interesting cliffhanger involving Sophie, so that’s something I’m really excited to see play out.
I give this a 9.1 out of 10
