Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the first issue of the new story in The High Republic Adventures from George Mann & Dark Horse comics.
This issue is the start of a new series in The High Republic Adventures and features the backstory of a brand new Sith Lord. It’s an interesting story, it’s always interesting to get introduced to a new bad guy. But just what is his story? And why introduce him now? Let’s jump into it!
Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #1 by George Mann (writer), Vincenzo Federici & Vincenzo Riccardi (illustrators), Michael Atiyeh & Vincenzo Riccardi (color art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jummy Betancourt (letterer’s), Eduardo Mello & Nicola Righi (cover art) focuses around and ancient tale of one of the first Sith Lords named Darth Ravi The Bold.
The story is being told from one of the oldest holocrons in the Jedi Temple to two Jedi who are investigating the archives for clues to find the Rod Of Ages. The Rod of Ages is a force artifact, one of a set, that helps control the Nameless. And of course the Nameless are creatures that feed on the living Force.

Most of the issue involves Darth Ravi and his back story. The artwork during this portion is quite possibly the most unique and mesmerizing artwork I’ve ever read. And the story is incredibly unique. We’ve only really ever seen a small handful of Sith Lords over the years. So the chance to get to see a new story about a new character is always great. I don’t expect Ravi to appear much more in the future, but stranger things have happened.
My favorite part of the issue is obviously the backstory surrounding Darth Ravi. It’s a new story, and entirely unique to anything I’ve ever read in Star Wars before. Plus the artwork is truly incredible and needs to be seen to be believed. My only complaint is that the backstory does drag on for maybe a few pages too long. But it doesn’t take away from the issue all that much.
FINAL POINT: It’s a great start to this story, and it’s going to be interesting to see where George Mann takes this story and how crazy it could get. It’s a very solid start and definitely one you’re going to want to keep an eye on. It’s got a lot of promise and should be very good going forward.
