When diving into the Venom War: Carnage #1, please note the Parental Advisory warning on the front.

The Venom War continues with Carnage! Carnage is off on his own obsessing over the weapon from Alchemax that was used on him and nearly killed him. Now he’s making experiments of his own to figure out all he can about the weapon. What it does, who created it, and why? Carnage is will to do anything to find what he’s looking for and won’t let anyone get in his way. That becomes very clear in Venom War: Carnage #1.

True to the character, this comic is dark, twisted, and perfectly fit for the character of Carnage. Seeing Carnage take over someone’s brain or body never gets old, but always feels creepy as hell. Carnage entering the thoughts of Alchemax employees to find what he needs to know about the deadly-to-symbiotes weapon makes me really excited to see what happens when he founds out. What really has me curious is who’s side will Carnage be on in the Venom War. Dylan? Eddie? Will Carnage follow dead old dad, Venom, to whichever host he ends up with? I don’t know, but I can’t wait to find out.

The Art

Like I said, this comic is dark and twisted in the best ways. The artwork of Venom War: Carnage #1 is done with the grittiness you want from a Carnage comic. I really enjoyed the juxtapositions of the blacks and the reds throughout the comic, giving it an uncanny vibe. Another thing I’ll never get tired of is seeing how the symbiotes are drawn. The spreading of the symbiote goo onto its victim is drawn beautifully.

The Writing

I enjoyed the plot of this comic a lot. It’s interesting to see Carnage in a vulnerable state but to do everything in his power to find what he needs. I’m really interested to see where this goes. Although, I liked the writing of Venom War: Carnage #1, I did really want to see how Carnage ties into the Venom War. Time will tell on that.

I give it an 7.8 out of 10
