After a valiant effort to try to evacuate as many people as they could on Eriadu, the Nihil occlusion zone has now brought the planet inside it’s impenetrable wall. And now that our heroes are on this side of the wall their problems have only just begun. Because now they have to contend with the oncoming Nihil occupation that will inevitably occur and the war that comes with it. But how exactly will they prepare for the oncoming battle? With a little prep work, and a dash of family issues! Let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #9 by Daniel Jose Older (writer), Toni Bruno (illustrator), Michael Atiyeh (color art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (letterer’s), Harvey Tolibao & Kevin Tolibao (cover art) is a thrilling issue that turns the page in the overarching story of our heroes that ramps up the danger for them by about 15 notches. Daniel has crafted another fantastic story that fans will want to read this week.

The majority of this issue focuses on our heroes escorting Sevran Tarkin to a High Council Meeting on Eriadu in an effort to raise awareness (and hopefully forces) for the upcoming battles with the Nihil. And the tension ramps up immediately once some Nihil forces show up to crash the party, so things aren’t starting out well. From there the focus splits between the crew that goes inside the meeting and those who stay outside. It’s a great mix of diplomacy and an eventual scuffle that really balances out the issue well.

The art is, as always, on point. Toni Bruno really does a fantastic job of making this series stand out from every other Star Wars comic on the shelves. And Michael Atiyeh’s colors really give the issue an extra pop that enhance the issue even further.

My favorite part of the issue is the diplomatic scenes inside the council meeting. So often in Star Wars, we see aggressive negotiations (with or without a lightsaber). And to see someone finessing their way into a meeting with something other than brute strength is awesome to see.

FINAL POINT: Daniel Jose Older crafts another SPECTACULAR issue that is quickly becoming a MUST READ issue each month. This issue especially is a wonderful blend between some exposition between characters and plot development. It’s going to be especially interesting to see how the heroes respond to the new challenges. If you haven’t been reading the series so far, this issue is a great jumping on point. And you do NOT want to miss this issue.

Score: 8.7 out of 10
