Star Wars #49 – Never Give Up

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of the mainline Star Wars comic series from Charles Soule & Marvel!

Things pick up where they left off in the last issue, where Luke, Leia & Evaan Verlaine went off to locate the missing Alderaan Survivor Fleet. And upon locating one of the missing ships, they stumbled right into a trap set by Zahra, an Imperial officer they thought was dead! Now they’re stuck on said ship, in the middle of nowhere. Will they be able to get out of it? Time will tell! Let’s jump into it!

Star Wars #49 by Charles Soule (writer), Jethro Morales (artist), Rachelle Rosenberg (color artist), VC’s Clayton Cowles (letterer), Stephen Segovia & Rain Beredo (cover artists) is another incredible issue from Charles Soule in what is the penultimate issue of this series. It’s an action packed conclusion to the mini-story being told between issues 48 & 49, and it sets up for a great final issue for this run in issue 50.

The issue is part explanation how Zahra escaped, which is WILD. Part battle between Luke, Leia & Zahra’s forces, and part resolution with Leia. It’s a great blend between all three storylines, and the master storyteller Charles Soule is at his absolute best here. The backstory is nuts, because it looks like something you might see in an Aliens movie. The battle is a classic Star Wars battle that shows off Luke in all his Jedi glory. And admittedly there is one part in the battle that’s going to be interesting to see fans reactions to. And the resolution/resolve Leia has at the end is classic Leia. You can almost hear Carrie Fisher herself telling how Leia believes in the Rebel Alliance, among other things in a brilliant speech. It’s an incredible issue from start to finish.

My favorite part of the issue is the speech Leia gives in the end, because like I said before it’s a quintessential Star Wars speech and reminds the readers why the characters are doing what they do. Charles did such a good job with the whole scene that it feels like it was lifted from a deleted scene from the films.

FINAL POINT: Charles Soule does an incredible job setting up the final issue of this incredible series by weaving together a fantastic story that is new but at the same time feels like a classic Star Wars story you might’ve seen someplace else (in a movie, tv show, video game, etc). And with the tease at the end, the finale is going to be very interesting to see what happens with the issue. Will they go the set up route? Or will they perhaps take a bit of a left turn and surprise us? Time will tell, and I’ll definitely be along for the ride. This issue is a fun read, and one that Star Wars & casual fans can read this week that is well worth the read.

SCORE: 9.5 out of 10
