Redcoat #5:

“Prisoners of the hooded cult called The Founding Fathers in 1892, Simon Pure and young Albert Einstein escape just long enough to get lost in mysterious catacombs. After being rescued by Benedict Arnold, it is revealed the cult’s Grand Architect is a very-much alive George Washington..” – Geoff Johns

Let’s Talk About the Art and Lettering:

This issue starts big and fiery with an impressively detailed look at the dollar bill. The impressive shaded effect as it begins to smoke continues to showcase how talented this art team is. Rob fantastically switches between an inner monologue that rings proper British tones within our heads, a deeper grave voice in Benedict, and a thick, innocent German accent in Albert. Bryan and Brad work as if they are one hand sowing seeds of mistrust in how Benedict is drawn and shaded, adding depth to the story being told. For a period piece I enjoy how everyones clothes, jewelry, even their hair match the period we are meant to be playing in.

How About That Story?

This particular issue is a roller coaster of emotions as Redcoat #5 adds twists, turns, and emotional depth to the story. Simon shows that deep down inside, he has a caring sense about him as that begins to surface, and his once lost bravery finds its way out in the face of despair. The relationship that Einstein and Simon have developed is one that we, the reader, have come to truly care about and become attached to. This issue ends with a shocking twist that I did not see coming as Geoff had even myself fooled for a bit in a testament to his story-telling abilities.

Final Thoughts:

Redcoat #5 continues to take the history we all know and turn it upside down in an emotionally charged, action-packed way. The art is astounding and the story continues to take us one way and then pull us another without warning.
