DC vs Vampires: World War V #1:
The world has become a wasteland as Earth’s mightiest heroes have become blood sucking vampires out to destroy humanity. Amongst the chaos a small pocket of resistance led by Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance fight for hope and for humanity. However, an unruly vampire by the name of Damien Wayne is threatening the truce they have with the Queen, Barbara Gordon. Sides must be chosen as the world is at war with vampires.
The Art:
Otto and Pierluigi offer up incredibly haunting designs of our favorite DC characters turned into hateful creatures of the night. Dawning their classic costumes, it is interesting to see them out for blood and kill anyone who stands against them. This issue does not shy away from the blood as various scenes of brutal murders and action do the horror aspect of this run justice. Tom’s letters fill our minds with the vile yet familiar voices we’ve grown used to hearing when seeing these heroes on the screen. This first issue holds nothing back as it leaps to take us into a dark and helpless underworld.
The Writing:
I was not sure what to expect as I opened this issue, but Matt has taken this concept and added flavor and interesting breadcrumbs throughout. Barbara Gordon is the queen of powerful villains and heroes, which drew me in almost instantly because it was different. The triumphant arrival of Black Canary and Green Arrow, along with Constantine, left us feeling hopeful despite the somber beginning we were faced with. There’s a lot of interesting storytelling happening and I am excited to see where this leads.
Overall:
DC vs. Vampires: World War V #1 launches us into a hopeless world where humans are hunted and all seems lost. The outstanding artwork and storytelling grab us immediately and hold onto us throughout the issue. This is going to be one horror fan will want to grab onto as we enter the fall months.
