Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of the Darth Vader comic series from Greg Pak & Marvel!

Things are quickly reaching a boiling point in the Star Wars galaxy between Darth Vader & the Schism Imperial. Last issue saw Sly Moore, the head of the Schism Imperial, betray Vader and left him stranded on the planet Endoviara Seven with the M.A.R. Corps. Meanwhile, Sly Moore left to go to where Luke Skywalker was with Sabe in an effort to further their own plans to overthrow the Emperor. But will it work? Let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: Darth Vader #49 by Greg Pak (writer), Rafaele Ienco (artist), Federico Blee (colorist), VC’s Joe Caramanga (letterer) & Leinil Francis Yu & Romulo Fajardo Jr (cover artists) is a great issue that is well worth the read for every Star Wars fan. It’s action packed, intriguing, and will leave you wishing the issue was a couple of pages longer.

The issue focuses around a couple of points this time round. The first of which involves Vader trying to escape from the clutches of the M.A.R. Corps. And they’ve captured him by turning the tables on him and implanting a droid brain inside of his suit that controls his body. It’s not a bad idea, and if it were ANYONE else it might work. But this is Darth freaking Vader we’re talking about!

The other focus is around Luke, Sabe & Warba on the planet Caranthanax B. If you remember last issue, Sabe had lured him there to test him and make sure he wouldn’t go down the same road that Vader did. Luke, Sabe & Warba are trying to escape the planet before Imperial forces show up. Unfortunately they don’t escape in time, because the Schism Imperial arrives before repairs can be made to the starship. I should note that during the entire time that Vader is being “held” captive by the M.A.R. Corp, he’s aware of what is happening to Luke and it’s clear he hasn’t escaped the “trap” yet because it doesn’t have his full focus at that very moment.

My favorite part of the issue is the whole story line with Vader. He’s been portrayed as this monster who is so domineering over everyone, and understandably so. So to see him held captive, even if it’s for a brief amount of time is really interesting to read. The dialogue between the members of the M.A.R. corps is particularly awesome because it just illustrates how overmatched they are.

Final Point: Greg Pak pens another INCREDIBLE issue in his fantastic run on the Darth Vader series. This issue, and the last few issues are about as can’t miss as it gets. It’s one that Star Wars fans are going to want to pick up at their comic book shops and read ASAP. If you haven’t been keeping up with the series, do yourself a favor and jump on now! You won’t be disappointed!

Score: 9.0 out of 10
