Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures from Daniel Jose Older and Dark Horse Comics!

This issue picks up the ongoing story of evacuating nearby planets that are endangered by being swallowed up (not literally) by the Nihil stormwall. If you don’t know what the Nihil stormwall is a barrier set up by the Nihil that anyone who is not a part of the group cannot get through.

It first appeared in the 2022 comic The High Republic: Eye of the Storm by Charles Soule. It’s been a huge plot point throughout the novels & comics lately and is a more unique obsticale to overcome besides the usual “hey look, another superweapon!” But enough backstory, let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #8 by Daniel Jose Older (writer), Harvey Tolibao (penciler), Le Beau Underwood & Elisabetta D’Amico (inkers), Michael Atiyeh (color art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (letterer’s), Harvey Tolibao & Kevin Tolibao (cover art) is another incredible issue from the entire crew behind this series. It’s action packed, suspenseful and the ending is shocking! Although if you’re up to date with the novels, it’s not that surprising. But it’s still fun to see on the page!

The issue picks up right where the last one left off, with our heroes crashing down to Eriadu in their starship as enemies around them continue their attack. They have no engines and the shields are almost gone, so things are not looking good.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW

The majority of the issue focuses on the heroes trying to survive the crashing ship and escape in one piece. It’s an incredible series of sequences because they’re making their way through exposed parts of the ship, all the while they’re trying to fight off the enemy. The other focus is on Krix Kamerat making his way onto the Gaze Electric, which is one of the flagships in the Nihil fleet.

If you’re looking for an action packed issue to read this week, this is the one for you! Between the crew crashing towards Eriadu while fighting off the enemy with lightsabers, and the espionage from Krix there is something for everyone in this issue. The artwork is also top notch if action isn’t your cup of tea, and if story is more your vibe well then Daniel Jose Older has penned an incredible story for you. There’s so much going on in the issue that it feels like the big battle of a movie.

My favorite part of the issue is the sequences with the crew above Eriadu trying to safely crash (if that’s even possible) to the surface of the planet, all the while fighting off the enemy. And if you’re curious why it’s my favorite part, there’s a Jedi batting laser blast from a starship with their lightsaber while the ship the Jedi is on is crashing at a 90 DEGREE ANGLE! It’s probably the most incredible sequence I’ve seen in recent memory!

FINAL POINT:

This issue is another feather in the cap for Daniel Jose Older with a great story, and a feather in the cap for the entire creative team. They really hit it out of the park in every facet of the issue. The story is awesome, the art work is top notch and it all blends together for a great story set in a fantastic time period for Star Wars.

As I’ve said before, some of the best storytelling in Star Wars is being done in The High Republic series and if you haven’t checked any of it out you need to. And this is a great issue to check out. The ending of this issue is also a great one. It’s not surprising if you’re up to date on the novels, but it’s good to see and helps place when this issue takes place in the time frame of things for The High Republic era. I HIGHLY recommend this issue for fans of the The High Republic, and fans of Star Wars in general.

SCORE: 9.0 out of 10
