“Let Me Take a Selfie with the Bloody Mask”

The Deviant #7 opens with an FBI Agent visiting a woman in Plainfield, WI. This woman is obsessed with the serial killer called The Deviant. She sells replica masks of the killers on Etsy. The FBI agent is there as he believes that a copycat has used one of her masks.

We then go to a prison visiting room in Milwaukee, WI. Here we have a young man speaking with Randall, The Deviant Killer. The young man is trying to clear his friend Michael who wrote books on The Deviant, but now finds himself accused of being a copycat.

While finally getting Randall to agree to help him, we see that Michael is having a tough time in prison. We then go back to the mask maker’s house. As she boasts that she’ll make a killing off the masks, she gets a visitor, but they aren’t there to buy a mask.

“You Really Are Sweet”

This issue and story show exactly why James Tynion IV is a master of horror comics. The way the story takes you from a true crime feeling and ends with the suspense of a slasher is fantastic. The story arc in this book alone takes you on a journey straight out of a horror movie.

The art in this book is very dreary and gives you that doomed feel. Joshua Hixson uses dark colors and blues to bring the desolate winter of Wisconsin to the forefront. The way he draws the characters makes you really feel their hopelessness.

This is usually where I would give a criticism. However, I have none for this issue. My only issue is myself and why I hadn’t read this yet and sadness that I must wait until next month for the next issue.

Final Thoughts

This book blew me away. When I got offered this book to review, I didn’t know what to expect. As a new comic book reviewer, I’ve been on a journey of new books to read and explore. This book makes me want to dive further into an uncharted area and I’ll be chomping at the bit to finish out this arc over the next couple of issues.

Final Grade: 10/10
