The Story:
The Blood Hunt is over and The Avengers are left wondering if they did enough to stop it. Meanwhile, a new threat is on it’s way to Earth and a powerful new member is recruited!
The Writing:
Character interactions were the main focus in this issue. Which is great, because that is something that Jed MacKay strives at. The opening scenes, the pairings of characters, and the “villainous” monologue to cap off the issue were interesting and thought provoking. As with the rest of this run, MacKay shows a deep understanding of these characters and their historical interactions. One conversation in particular, that of Tony Stark and Carol Danvers, made me feel like this was truly a continuation of the stories I read in the ’90’s as a kid. The wonderful surprise at the end of this book really took it over the edge and I cannot wait to see how MacKay writes THAT character!
The Art:
Artist Valerio Schiti joins the team in this issue and knocks it out of the park. There is an energy to Schiti’s work that pairs so well with Bryan Valenza’s colors. The art reached it’s peak in scenes between Captain America and Storm. Plus, the final full page look at the upcoming threat is amazing! That character has never looked this good before! Speaking of the surprise threat, the art team does a great job giving hints to the long time readers without giving away who it is to someone less familiar with Marvel Comics. Overall, great work and I am excited to see what this team can do moving forward!
The Verdict: 9/10
Avengers #17 does a great job of wrapping up the events of Blood Hunt while getting the reader excited for what is to come. What is to come looks to be one wild ride! This is a great jumping on point for anyone who has not been picking this book up. I highly recommend it!
