The New Roster

Time for an all new X-Force handpicked by Forge himself! I was really excited to dive into X-Force #1 given I was such a fan of the older X-Force. This time, our X-Force roster includes Forge, Sage, Betsy Braddock, Rachel Summers, and Tank. It seems that with each comic and each threat, Forge will bring in a recruit to help the X-Force and this time it’s Deadpool.

Deadly Sludge?

In X-Force #1, we start with Forge and Sage traveling to a town in Japan that’s gone completely dark. Where did all of the citizens go? What about the animals? What happened to this town? Why is the main power grid down?

They’re greeted by Noriko Ashida, AKA Surge, in an unfriendly manner as she’s trying to protect the citizens who are hidden. According to Surge, a lively sludge has attacked any living being in the town. Once the sludge touches you, it absorbs you. Since they’re all being overrun with the deadly sludge, Forge calls in Deadpool and Tank for assistance. Together, the X-Force, with the assist from Deadpool must save the town and the townspeople as a new team.

The Art

The artwork in X-Force #1 had all the X-Men vibes you could ask for. Lots of really great details balanced really nicely in each panel. The juxtaposition of the dark colors with the bright details was pitch perfect for X-Force #1. This contrast of colors really showcased nicely in each panel of the X-Force members using their powers, namely Surge and Rachel Summers.

I loved the look of the new X-Force suits each team member was wearing. It gives the new team a much more serious look, which I appreciate.

The Writing

So far, X-Force #1 has me hooked with how compelling the comic was. It gave just enough to keep you wanting more. I enjoyed the dialogues between each character, especially Deadpool with the X-Force members. I feel Geoffrey Thorne has a firm grasp on the characters to their core and it shows very well in this first installment. The writing was very well balanced with action, dialogue, and even some humor throughout the comic. I can’t wait to see X-Force #2!

I give this an 9 out of 10
