Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of The Amazing Spider-Man from Marvel & Zeb Wells!

The Zeb Wells run in Spider-Man is nearing it’s end. After this issue, there are only 4 issues left. And while this run has been a mixed bag, this latest story has been mostly interesting.

We’ve seen Peter Parker turn into the Spider-Goblin thanks to the sins of Norman Osborn being released. And there’s been an ongoing battle to try to stop the spirit of Norman’s past from wreaking anymore havoc. With that said, let’s jump into it!

The Amazing Spider-Man #54 by Zeb Wells (writer), Ed McGuinness (penicler), Mark Farmer, Mark Morales, Wade Von Grawbadger & EdMcGuinness (inkers), Marcio Menyz (colorist), VC’s Joe Caramanga (letterer), Ed McGuinness, Mark Farmer & Marcio Menyz (cover artists) is a good issue that wraps a bow on the story of Peter & co vs Norman’s sins. The story has felt like it’s overstayed it’s welcome in my opinion. But despite it’s potential, it really goes out with a small pop rather than the bang I think it deserved.

Obviously the main focus of the issue is the battle between Peter & Norman vs the sins of Norman’s past (aka the Green Goblin spirit). And it’s a thrilling issue from start to finish. The battle between Peter, Norman & the Green Goblin spirit isn’t exactly a knockdown, drag out fight but it’s still interesting.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW

Norman & Peter have had their fair share of battles over the years, and I would argue they’re about as synonymous as Batman & The Joker or Superman & Lex Luthor. So to see Norman & Peter working together to stop the one thing that’s caused them both so much turmoil over the years is very interesting to read. The Goblin spirit wants Peter in the worst way possible, and Peter & Norman do everything they can to stop it.

My favorite part of the issue is when the Winkler device asks the question “who is Spider-Man?” And the answer it gives and what it shows are a great reflection of the character and who exactly he is. It’s a moment that I think will touch every Spider-Man fans heart in someway.

FINAL POINT: The ending of the battle is a little lackluster to say the least. You’d figure that with as much history as Peter & Norman have with the Green Goblin that the battle would be a little more extravagant, but that’s not the case here. If Doctor Strange were here, I could at least understand why things go the way they do but that isn’t the case here. Things happen the way they do, and the story moves on. And despite the ending, we all know that one character isn’t going to stay “gone” forever.

In fact, I’ll say that character is back within a year of the release of this issue. This issue is another misstep in the Zeb Wells run that has been extremely hit or miss. If you’ve been reading the series up to this point, you’ll probably want to pick it up to see how it ends. But if you haven’t been, I wouldn’t blame you for skipping it this week. The next issue is the start of the final story from Zeb Wells, so hopefully it’s better than what we’ve been reading. But only time will tell.

SCORE: 6.7 out of 10
