The Story:
This is the final showdown between Captain America’s band of Avengers and Baron Blood’s Nazi vampires! With things looking bleak for The Avengers, the team has to work together to turn the tide and stop the fascist blood suckers once and for all!
The Writing:
Solid character interactions and deep cut references were the big highlight of this issue. MacKay’s grasp of this team and the way they banter and play off of each other make this so much more than the usual, throw away, tie-in book. On top of the dialogue, the story in general was just fun! Watching a group of heroes who have never fought together as a team discover strengths and learn about one another is one of my favorite things about any great Avengers book. Jed MacKay has taken a group of that not many would be interested in reading and made them into a team that deserve their own title.
The Art:
The art team on this story has been, consistently, great! The vampires look creepy, the heroes look heroic, and the backgrounds look stunning. The action, emotion, and fun on display are all top notch. The colors need a special shout out this time around, the incredible contrast from light to dark as the sun pours into the dark helicarrier was a real treat. Phenomenal work all around once again!
The Verdict: 9/10
This was a great story set in the middle of an event that I am not reading. I should not, by all reasoning, love this arc as much as I did. However, great writing, wonderful art, and deep cut references made me fall in love with this story and this team. I really hope to see more of this team in the near future.
