Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And for this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures from Daniel Jose Older & Dark Horse Comics!

This issue is the first part of a new story in The High Republic Adventures from Daniel Jose Older that is going to be called The Evacuation Run and it features Lula, Zeen & other Jedi racing to evacuate younglings & other people from the systems surrounding the Bri Phrang Outpost, because the Nihil Occlusion Zone is nearby and they have NO CLUE when it could move next. With that said, let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures issue #7 by Daniel Jose Older (writer), Harvey Tolibao (penciler), Le Beau Underwood and Elisabetta D’Amico (inkers), Michael Atiyeh (color art) & Comicraft’s Tyler Smith and Jimmy Betancourt (letterer’s) is a fun issue that set’s up the future issues of this story incredibly well. The issue has it all, action & adventure, witty banter, and high stakes.

The story starts off peacefully enough, or as peaceful as it can be during a system wide evacuation. But as usual, it doesn’t stay quiet for long. Because after a meeting between a group that tried to have the leader of the Nihil (who’s known as Marchion Ro) assassinated ends after Krix Kamerat walks out of the meeting to “get some air”. He then has the bright idea that he’s going to take matters into his own hands and fly INTO the Nihil Occlusion Zone himself. The Nihil Occlusion Zone is a literal wall in space that is separating the planets inside the wall from those outside of it, and the only way to get inside it is to have a path engine. A Path Engine is a different type of way of entering hyperspace that only the Nihil have access to, or they’re supposed to be the only ones. A couple of Path Engines have fallen out of their hands during the ongoing conflict. Whether it works or not is not a secret I’m going to be giving away here, you’ll have to read that yourself.

CHECK OUT MORE HIGH REPUBLIC!

My favorite part of the issue is the separate conversations that Lula & Zeen have with the members of their crew about how the feel about one another. I don’t want to go into full spoilers, but it was a lot of fun and it was a story I connected with on a deep level having gone through a similar situation less than 1 year ago.

FINAL POINT: The artwork is as great as ever, and kudos to the whole team for that. The issue is a fun read for fans of The High Republic new & seasoned. It’s an easy jumping in point since it’s the start of a new story, and while you might not be familiar with all of the characters right away you’ll learn them over time. I’m also very interested to see where this story goes, because the ending is very interesting and the possible routes this could go are doubly interesting.

Score: 8.7 out of 10
