Hard Times

We start Endless #1 with our main character, Henry Quan, feeling every part of the current climate. Everything’s getting hotter, more expensive, less giving, and his life is suffering with it. He’s working crazy hours just to barely make ends meet, and that’s not including how much his mother’s retirement home is going to run him.

Speaking of his mother, he goes to meet her to spend the day with her. While bringing her back, he’s told his time is up with pushing off payments for her stay. He has to pay up, but he hasn’t got the money to do so. So he meets an old friend to get some work. It’s not your regular kind of employment, but a heist. He must steal from a freighter that contains some sort of prototype of some sort. If all goes to plan, they’ll be out in less than half an hour. But do these things really ever go to plan?

The Art

I thought it was very creative how everything was black and white until the very end, showcasing the multiverse. Something else I found interesting was how simply everything was drawn but with a lot of detail. I think it added to the tone very well. The artists clearly had a lot of fun with Endless #1. It makes me excited to see what’s next in the second installment.

The Writing

The writing was very well done. The story made you able to relate to Henry and his current life problems, but then made you excited for when the heist started. It felt very grounded to me while still having a good bit of excitement in the end. It has a nice balance throughout the comic of realism and sci-fi which was handled perfectly. The ending was written expertly that had me wanting more and more.

Final Thoughts

I found this comic to be very captivating throughout Endless #1. I’m very excited to read the rest of the run as it’s said to be a difference universe or a different life in each installment. Overall, this felt really refreshing to me. Hats off to the creative team!

I give this an 8 out of 10.
