Werewolf By Night Blood Hunt #1:

THE BLOOD HUNT RAGES! Around the world, something mysterious is happening with the Darkforce! For reasons and by forces unknown, it has been extracted from those living superhumans who wield it. While the mysterious architect of this catastrophic turn of events is busy with his own violent designs, a growing shadow reaches across the earth!

The Art:

Adam and Alex bring us a magical, blood-soaked adventure in this addition to the Blood Hunt saga. From the get-go, they manage to capture the abandoned theme park feeling of mystery and spooky while adding in the details such as overgrowth and bringing this scenery to life. Utilizing the color pallet going from ghostly pale to purple, Sinclair transitions our ghost into a demon with the help of Alex, drawing him in such a menacing fashion. The contrast between our resident demon who emerges and is drawn in a fit of mischief and rage compared to the power and might of when Jake is a Werewolf does a great job through art showcasing who we should be rooting for out of these monsters. The details on throughout the face and the minute hairs drawn show life and convey emotion extraordinarily well in this issue.

When it comes to transforming Jake into the Werewolf, both sync up to create a powerful sequence that displays the grotesque way his body morphs into the creature in a powerful panel. When it comes to the action, we are not short on how bloody this issue and story can get as Jake rips through vampires and even humans alike with rage.

The Writing:

Jason does a wonderful job introducing us to Jake Gomez, who may not be as well known to readers, and endearing him to us by the end of the issue. We connect with him through his musical references and how, through music, we can subdue the hunger and rage we sometimes feel. It does a great job of sympathizing with this character immediately. Throughout this issue we get nods and call backs to Ghost Rider, Mephisto, and the evil that lurks at large that connect this story to the other Blood Hunt issues while containing it at the same time.

Loo and Sabino capture the humor and, at times, lightheartedness in the words and lettering, which keep this issue light despite the violence. It’s a well-rounded story that adds another creature and element to the bigger picture being told.

Overall:

Werewolf By Night Blood Hunt #1 packs a vicious punch as it enters the Blood Hunt story. Jake is filled with rage but a sense of duty and caring, while the bloodthirsty vampires and demons will attack even kids to achieve their quest.
