Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue in The High Republic from Cavan Scott and Marvel Comics!

This issue is a continuation of the story surrounding Keeve Trennis, Sskeer, Tey Sirrek and Lourna Dee in their ongoing quest to save a child who is strong in the Force. Things were looking good in the last issue, up until they came face to face with a Nameless. For those who don’t know, a nameless is an animal that affects Force users because they prey on the literal Force, and since Jedi are extremely adept at using it they’re natural targets. So with that said, let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: The High Republic issue #9 by Cavan Scott (writer), Laura Braga (artist), Jim Campbell (colorist) & VC’s Ariana Maher (letterer) is action packed from start to finish. It starts with an explosion from Lourna because she thought it was a good idea, and ends with the heroes ship jumping into hyperspace and an even more uncertain future.

In the middle of all this is a group of heroes just trying to get their footing, and survive this long enough to escape. It’s one of the crazier issues I’ve read recently, and I need to give a lot of credit to Cavan Scott for writing such an incredible story. It’s part action film, part horror film, part sci-fi and it’s all awesome!

SPOILERS AHEAD

The standout moment in this issue is what happens with Sskeer. He’s a Trandoshian Jedi Master who has been struggling with where he falls in the balance of the Force. He ends up confronting Baron Boolan and taking a metallic glove from him that shoots beams of electricity out of it, it’s not Force lightning but it looks like it. And if it wasn’t clear already that Sskeer is teetering he says to Boolan, “A Jedi? Is that who you think I am, Baron? What I am. These days, I’m not so sure.” Sskeer is one of the most powerful Jedi in The High Republic, and he’s been through an awful lot since everything started. And to see him going through this is heartbreaking, and I’m very interested to see how things turn out.

End of Spoilers

Final Point: Cavan Scott tells an absolutely incredible story in this issue that standsout among the rest of the Star Wars stories that have been released in recent history. If you’ve been keeping up with The High Republic since the beginning, or just this comic series, this is a can’t miss issue. There’s a lot going on, and the implications for the heroes could be far reaching and have a lasting impact. The artwork is top notch as always, and really help the issue pop out on the page and add a layer of depth to the story. This issue is another example of what I’ve been saying, and that is that The High Republic has some of the BEST storytelling in Star Wars right now.

Score: 9.5 out of 10
