Springer tries his best to put Proximus down for the count, while Solila hangs on to her last breaths. A huge revelation occurs when Springer makes a connection between the Void Rivals and Cybertron. As Springer races Darak and Solila to safety, an ancient force reaches out asking to be found. Unfortunately for them though, the Zertonians have a few more cards to play before giving up the fight, and new dangers are at their doorstep!

The Missing Piece in Void Rivals

This series has been one of my favorites so far, but I’ve been waiting for that (!!!) moment. There’s been some fantastic character development, awesome world building, and huge cameos and easter eggs.

It’s been a great read all on it’s own. But, as for how they fit into the Transformers universe, I still felt like something was missing. Issue 10 finally hit that sweet spot for me!

***SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD***

The History of the Void Rivals Transforms!

As Solila is dying, Darak removes his helmet and Springer is shocked at the gem shamed spot on each of their foreheads that Darak calls his “Mind Eye”. Springer explains to him that those are actually Energon ports! WHAT?! That had me hyped and I couldn’t wait to read on.

Spinger begins healing Solila while she is in a dream state, almost like a spirit world for Zertonia. Her she is spoken to by her Deity Zerta. Solila pledges her loyalty to helping find Zerta somewhere deep within this world. Upon awakening, Solila is glowing pink with energy from the Energon Springer gave her.

After exchanging information, Springer informs them that one of their greatest Autobots left to forge a new path and her name was ZERTA TRION! I’m absolutely beaming at this point into the story and I’m trying my best to keep my feet on the ground.

Robert Kirkman is Cooking with Void Rivals

I’m not saying that Robert Kirkman has been slow burning his story, the pacing of each book and the series overall has been perfect. What I craved more than anything though, was “what makes these beings so connected to the Transformers?”

To get such a huge reveal that a Trion is connected to the ring planet of Zertonia was a big deal. These are the oldest of Transformers, the ones that rebelled against the Quintessons, which have already played a part in Void Rivals so far.

Kirkman is brewing up some really deep and fun new lore for the Transformers universe and my curiosity is humming with anticipation for more. He’s already built this amazing new corner of the franchise and now he’s taking it all to a new level.

The Artwork Shines Like Energon

Lorenzo De Felici just gets it, man. Beautiful lines, precise anatomy, and a master of dynamic action. Panels can range from minimal and simplistic to massive and detailed. What’s great is that he knows exactly when to shift those gears and each choice is appropriate for the story at the moment.

Patricio Delpeche takes that work from Felici and makes it pop. His color choices for the various races and environments are so spot on. He adds so much depth tho what we see, making every panel immersive.

Let’s not forget Rus Wooten here either. When you have a book involving a transformer in battle, you’re gonna have tons of sound effects to express. Transformations, giant robot movements, and swords swinging. The large and eccentric fonts bring all of that to life!

Everything Points To 10/10

This is one of the best issues of this run so far for me. Springer is delightful and a blast to watch in action. Darak and Solila are a great pair and bring a little comedic relief without being silly. Now that I have that little slice of Transformers lore that i’ve been waiting for, I’ll be biting my nails in anticipation of more. Transformers fans should not be missing out on this series!
