Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And I’m here to review the latest issue in the Saber For Hire story from Cavan Scott & Dark Horse comics!

Now if you read my review of issue #2, I was not a fan of that issue, I gave it a 6 out of 10. But I have to say I really enjoyed this issue. It wasn’t the greatest thing I ever read, but it was certainly much better than the last one. So with that being said, let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #3 by Cavan Scott (writer), Rachael Stott (illustrator), Nicola Righi & Vita Efremova (color art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (letterer’s) picks up from where the last issue left off, with saber for hire Ty Yorrick having finished her latest job by rescuing children captured by the Nihil and importantly rescuing Lene Kostana. Kostana is a Force sensitive child that the Nihil have taken a great interest in, and more so than the other children.

The issue starts off as a slow build to the action in the issue, but once things kick off they kick off BIG. Lene Kostana is happy to be with her parents, and Ty Yorrick is preparing to leave. It’s not the most heartfelt goodbye from Ty, but there isn’t long to dwell because Ty senses something is wrong with Lene and immediately goes back. And upon returning she see’s that the settlement she just left is now overrun by the Nihil who have somehow found them and are trying to find Lene.

SPOILERS BELOW

My favorite part of the issue is when Ty reunites with Lene after Lene’s parents have been killed. And Lene tearfully tells Ty that she felt her parents death’s, and Ty tearfully tells Lene that they’re going to get her out of there. It’s a great sequence and a opens up Ty a little bit and shows they have some emotions beyond cold and stoic.

My one complaint with this issue is The Nameless showing up. For those who don’t know, The Nameless are a creature that affect Force users and render their abilities useless. And my issue isn’t necessarily with this issue specifically, but with The High Republic comic books in general lately. It feels like we’re seeing The Nameless just a little too much lately. In the novels I’ve read sure it might show up, but not in every book. It’s used sparingly, and that way when it does show up it means more. So I think perhaps the creative team behind all of The High Republic comics need to dial it back on using The Nameless.

End Of Spoilers

The artwork is great in this issue, giving off a calm relaxed feel with the colors. And the issue is anything but calm or relaxed. Everything about the artwork pops and really stands out on the shelf with other Star Wars comics. It also continues to stand out from the other Star Wars issues Dark Horse has done lately.

FINAL POINT: The issue is a strong return to form for Cavan Scott after a brief hiccup in the last issue, and it’s an issue that pulls at the heartstrings a little bit. The issue feels like the first step in the next chapter of this story, and it’s going to be interesting to see where it goes from here. It’s a great read and one that I think Star Wars fans should give a chance and read. If you’re a newer Star Wars fan you might not want to jump in on this issue specifically, but if you’re a seasoned Star Wars fan you’ll definitely want to read it.

Score: 7.8 out of 10
