Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue in The High Republic Adventures series from Dark Horse Comics!

This issue finds the recently liberated prisoners of the Korvix Vorn back at their headquarters of Eriadu for some much needed relaxation before things inevitably get going again. And with the ongoing war between the Republic and the Nihil, you just know it isn’t going to last long.

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #6 by Daniel Jose Older (writer), Harvey Tolibao (penciler), Le Beau Underwood & Harvey Tolbao (ink), Michael Atiyeh (color art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (letterers) spends the first half of the issue with Lula Talisola, a force sensitive individual who’s taken a lot of different paths on the journey called life, and the other half dealing with the Nihil. And let’s face it, if it involves a story set during the High Republic era than you know the Nihil cannot be very far behind.

We learn a little bit about Lula Talisola and all the twists and turns their life has taken over the years. But finally, after a lot of trials and hardships Lula finally feels like they have a family and someplace to call home. And just when things are calmed down enough and everyone is relaxing, the powder keg explodes again. I won’t go into spoilers, but if you’ve read the novel Star Wars The High Republic: The Eye of Darkness by George Mann, you know what happens.

My favorite part of the issue is during a battle that takes place, we find our heroes on top of a speeder that (understandably) doesn’t have any shields and instead they have two protectors on top deflecting blaster bolts from other ships with lightsabers. It’s a phenomenal panel that Tolibao, Underwood & Atiyeh all deserve a round of applause for.

Speaking of the artwork, I really need to give credit to the entire crew for this issue. Because it’s stands out so much from the other stuff you might read any given week. The colors are vibrant, the scenes are incredibly detailed, and there isn’t too much going on to overwhelm the reader. So major props to the entire crew for the artwork this issue.

Final Point: Daniel Jose Older is a phenomenal story teller and I would definitely put him in the category of “can’t miss” anytime a new project of his releases. And the story Older tells in this issue is a great one. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the storytelling the entire crew are doing with The High Republic series are phenomenal and some of the best storytelling being done in Star Wars today at any level. This issue is a great jumping on point for new readers young or old, and gets a story going while also catching people up on things.

Score: 9.0 out of 10
