Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And I’m here to review the latest issue in the Saber For Hire story from Cavan Scott & Dark Horse comics!
This issue is chapter 2 in the Saber for Hire storyline featuring the journeys of Ty Yorrick and her partner Drewen going around hunting monsters from behind the Nihil Occlusion zone. And as you’d expect, that job is never as simple as it might seem.
Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Saber for Hire #2 by Cavan Scott (wirter), Rachel Stott (illustrator), Nicola Righi (color art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (letterer’s) is split between Ty Yorrick, the former Jedi turned exterminator, rescuing a group of Force sensitive children from the clutches of the Nihil and her partner Drewen trying to prove himself to Yorrick that’s more useful than a simple babysitter.
To be honest, the issue is fine but there’s almost too much going on with the story. It’s flipping back and forth between a flashback sequence at the start, the adventure of Yorrick rescuing the kids, and Drewen doing whatever he can to prove his usefulness.
The action sequences are good, and exceptionally drawn. But the story ultimately falls flat because it doesn’t really have any lasting impact on the ongoing story of the High Republic. The only impactful part doesn’t come until more than halfway through the issue when it’s finally revealed what Drewen has done in his foolishness to prove himself. And that is going to be interesting to see how that play’s out. But the rest of the issue honestly feels skippable.
The artwork is great and stands out from other Star Wars projects that Dark Horse does, and the art crew definitely deserve some praise for that. It’s vibrant and bright, and really draws your eyes towards the action on the page.
FINAL POINT: The issue isn’t the strongest work that Cavan Scott has ever done. But that’s okay, not every issue can be a hit. The issue largely feels like filler and more than half of the issue is focused on an event that won’t have any impact on the story going forward, but the parts that do have an impact on the story will be interesting to see how they play out going forward.
