The Blood Brothers Mother:
Creative Team: Brian Azzarello (Writer,) Eduardo Risso (Art and Colors,) and Jared K. Fletcher (Letters.) Cover by Eduardo Risso.
This old western tale takes us to the lands of Mexico, where Carter is released from prison after five years of a hard time and is reunited with Levi and his crew. However, his former wife, Anna, has been married to another man in his absence, and Carter is now out to seek revenge. This gruesome tale is one ripe with revenge and a thirst for blood, Carter may have another sentence yet to serve.
The Art:
This comic has many breathtaking moments as it delivers a bloody return to a gruesome time. Westerns are back; I have said it before, and Eduardo nails the tone and colors of what an old-school Western should be. He does not hold back in the gory deaths portrayed within the pages, which leave us gasping and yet excitedly turning the page for more. The use of yellows with the blood red stands out as well, and I am ready for more!
The Writing:
The story took a turn I did not expect as this serves as a precursor for what is to come down the road. I am a fan of the bait-and-switch that Azzarello uses to weave his tale. The vernacular and general verbiage used as well suck us into a time long lost to the sands of time, further exciting the reader. Fletcher, meanwhile, weaves some absolutely masterful lettering within the pages, which serves as a narration that completes the circle.
Overall:
This issue is bloody and violent, as a Western tale should be. The story is laid out perfectly, and the artwork compliments this tale. I am fully on board and cannot wait for issue #2 as this story has a lot of potential to it. Make sure you add it to your list!
