This review was made possible by early screener of Saban’s Cash Out. Cash Out will have a limited theatrical run on April 26th
First Impressions
I need to preface by saying I’m not a John Travolta Fan. In fact, until this film, I would only say that I enjoyed his role in the motion picture film Hairspray, and I actually very much enjoyed him in Cash Out. The story is terribly uncomplicated and very predictable. High-rolling mastermind thief Mason (John Travolta) decides to retire after one botched heist, only to be pulled into one more job that goes wrong in every way possible. As unoriginal as this film is, Cash Out still has enough fun moments to keep you watching.
Missed Opportunities
The film starts vague, with good cause, to allow for the surprise twist. Beyond Travolta, the cast is full of potential. The true crime in this heist film is that we were robbed an opportunity to really flesh out each member of the ensemble. This is especially upsetting regarding the duo of Hector (Noel Gugliemi) and Anton (Quavo). They have great chemistry and are immediately likable, but they didn’t remotely have enough screen time. The movie ends rather anticlimactically, and feels as if it just ends with a very lazy explanation.
Final Thoughts
Cash Out has a simple plot, predictable turns and a lackluster end. Though it is not ground breaking, there is lots of fun to be had. Travolta makes Mason very fun and likable, but at the cost of screen time for other characters. Cash Out is worth a watch with a score of 3 out of 5.
