Kimberly is captured by the silver-haired sorceress who is on the hunt for rangers, and we just met Kim and Tommy’s kid. This issue doesn’t disappoint, either.

The Story

We are finally getting somewhere! That being the moon! The Rangers are captured and the Rita-wannabe be is revealed to be the daughter of Zedd and Rita! Finster is still kicking it on the moon because, Finster! So Selena Replusa, in a typical VK fashion, wants to bring back Mommy. So Grandpa Finster has fashioned a new machine using his monster-matic charged with the Z staff AND the Power Coins they have all 5 but not the WHOLE SET!

THE ART

As of this issue, this is my front-runner for artwork! Selena’s design is stunning. The aged-up Rangers make sense. But the chaos of the atypical big bad monologue is accentuated by the broken-up panels! Finster’s new design is almost perfect (see below). The lettering from Dukeshire is always solid, and then some of those big onomatopoeia words pop right off the page!

Thoughts from THE GRID

So Kimberly gets captured, and it’s just a blurb on how the rest of the rangers get captured. Selena is a good name, although I would have liked maybe Finnea, who references Rita’s mom in the comics. But that said, this is a whole different universe, so you have to take that into consideration, too. I like that we got to see Bulk and Skull again, and it is on a similar timeline, considering they went on to be cops in season 2. So, big props to parallel continuity! But it’s been 22 YEARS, and they’re still beat cops……

On to Finster, I LOVE THE FACT HE LIVED ON DEAD MONSTER REMAINS FOR 22 YEARS!!!! But I would have preferred that he was mutated a bit more than bandaged. possibly showing some traits of the monsters he consumed. Think about a Goldar claw or Baboo foot. But that’s one of the stylistic choices. Lastly, following up the whole daughter aspect, they didn’t mess with the design. as much as I love innovation in franchises, keeping it the same was stylistically a perfect choice.

MMPR THE RETURN #3 8 out of 10 Power Coins

The only big hiccups were the fact of how easily the other power coins were obtained. Giving Selena the atypical twisted story of who saved them as a baby seems also like it was an easy write off but hopefully that will be resolved later. It also leaves so much story on WHO raised her and HOW did she come into her own powers? These are all simple answers lets hope that the next few books are paced right to tie up the loose ends and not have to leave big plot holes to fill IF we get another chapter after this arc.
