I have a soft spot for Deadpool. There’s just something about his humor and wild energy that always brings a smile to my face. Needless to say, I was ecstatic to dive into reviewing Deadpool #1!

I was already excited for more Deadpool comics; however, my excitement doubled upon learning that Cody Ziglar would be writing it.

I love anything that man puts out, especially after Spider Punk #1, which was absolutely fantastic. Deadpool #1 definitely brings the heat just as all of Ziglar’s previous writing does.

A Broken Heart

We start with a heartbroken Deadpool. Deadpool is going through the motions of a classic breakup. He’s trying to keep distracted with keeping his hands and mind busy. What better way to get your mind off of a breakup than throwing yourself into work?

That’s pretty relatable. The work in question being an assassin? That part isn’t too relatable. Unless it is for some, I’m not here to judge.

Deadpool is joined by Princess the symbiote hyena, which was confused for a dog by our main character. Princess is the adopted daughter of Wade Wilson(Deadpool). I really enjoyed seeing these two work together while both healing from a broken family as Wade shares custody of Princess with his ex, Valentine Vuong.

The Mission at Hand

Deadpool’s mission is to take out a mad scientist who also happens to be a mutant who can create portals. While this mission doesn’t go the way Deadpool was hoping, we’re blessed with a new villain. A villain that takes a very special interest in Deadpool. I have to say, this new villain is very compelling. I really can’t wait to see where this goes with him.

The Art

The artwork in Deadpool #1 is outstanding, as expected with Rogê Antônio and Guru-eFX at the helm. The vibrant color contrasts between scenes and the striking blood-red appearance of Deadpool and Princess are executed beautifully.

Princess’s depiction is particularly captivating, quickly becoming one of the highlights of the comic for me.

The Writing

I can’t say enough how big of a fan I am of Cody Ziglar. I swear he just doesn’t miss. There’s not one thing I would change about the writing in Deadpool #1.

The inner dialogue of Deadpool was great to see when comparing to what he’s saying out loud. It showed how much Wade Wilson is hurting during this rough patch of his life, while showing the well known character trait of making a joke to mask the pain he’s really experiencing.

In the comic, we see hints of what Wade is struggling with whether it be about his breakup with Valentine or his relationship with his daughter, Ellie. Ziglar does an exceptional job at leaving you wanting more, and that’s exactly what he did here.

I Give This a 10

Overall, I think this deserves a 10 out of 10. The writing, the art, the characters, everything was excellent. I truly can’t wait to see what’s next for Deadpool and Princess. I have so many theories running around in my head as to what could be next. If you’re a Deadpool fan like me, I can guarantee you’ll find this comic exciting and compelling!
