Hey! It’s Megan! Don’t forget to check out my other comic reviews HERE!

Oh, the nostalgia…

After getting my world rocked by X-Men 97 on Disney+, I really didn’t think I had any more nostalgia left to use. Boy, I sure was wrong! X-Men ’97 #1 really hit it home for me. The amount of X-Men content we’ve gotten lately is music to my nerdy ears. I’m loving all of the changes they’ve made while keeping the same energy of the X-Men that we all know and love.

Time to dive in

Jumping into X-Men ’97 #1, it started off on an adventurous note including our favorite mutants attempting to stop Magneto from chaos and destruction in Times Square. And so, after they make quite a few missteps and a huge lack of teamwork, it’s revealed that this was nothing more than a Danger Room session.

Next, the team leaves the simulation squabbling when they’re mission is presented to them by Hank McCoy. Dazzler has been abducted by the enemies of the mutants, Friends of Humanity.

Immediately, the team gets on their way to save Dazzler, while Hank stays behind with Jean who has a mysterious upset stomach. Rogue and Gambit are alerted to the emergency and beat the team there.

The fight ensues and the X-Men are able to free Dazzler but not before government official Valerie Cooper, U.N. Liaison of Mutant Affairs drops by. She arrives in good faith and gives the X-Men hope of a united relationship between the mutants and the government. However, I should note that Wolverine is suspicious and picks up a familiar scent that he just can’t seem to place.

A Mini Mutant in the Making!

Arriving back at the X-Mansion, Jean is ready to share some really big news to Scott, who has too much going on in that moment and says he will listen later. She reveals a positive pregnancy test in her hand and Scott is none the wiser.

A Night to Remember For All

Interestingly enough, we get so many answers to the questions about the comic’s Disney+ counterpart. We see when Storm changed her hair from her flowing long hair to a mohawk that Jubilee describes as “totally punk rock”. Storm had plans to debut her new look at Dazzler’s concert she was attending with Jubilee but she volunteer’s Bishop to go instead.

Speaking of Bishop, it’s also revealed that Bishop is stuck in that in that time period as opposed to his home in future until Beast finds a way to fix his time-travel device.

Rogue, Gambit, Bishop, and Jubilee are at the concert prepared for a fun evening. Their fun filled night is interrupted by The Nasty Boys. After some excellent fighting done by Dazzler, Rogue, and Gambit, the show goes on!

Meanwhile

We pop back to the X-Mansion to see Jean about to break the news to Scott about their future bundle of joy but we don’t get to see his reaction. But what we do see is a very downhearted Wolverine listening outside their door. I really wanted to see how this scene continued. I can only imagine all of the different emotions from Wolverine, Jean, and Scott.

Arriving to the end of X-Men ’97 #1, we get to see The Nasty Boys coming to Mister Sinister with their tails between their legs. Unsurprisingly, they failed their mission.

Nevertheless, Mister Sinister has new plans for his mission, and it looks like he is going to be hiring some new help led by Sabretooth. Color me intrigued.

Nostalgia factors aside, this had everything you could want from an X-Men comic. It had the fight scenes that are always top notch. The comic had emotion, that we saw between many of the X-Men.

We got answers to questions we’ve had since posters of the Disney+ X-Men 97 characters were released. We got to see Scott, Wolverine, Beast, Jubilee, Jean, Storm, Rogue, Gambit, even Dazzler! Like I said before, music to my nerdy ears.

The writing excellent! Somehow they managed to pack so many exciting things into one issue and still have a great flow. The artwork was phenomenal! The colors were very aesthetically pleasing. I love how every character looked, especially Storm. Personally, I’m a huge fan of the mohawk. A badass look for a badass woman!

I highly recommend giving this a read if you’re a big X-Men fan like I am. Honestly, I wouldn’t change a single thing about it. I promise it won’t disappoint!

The cliffhangers really left me wanting so much more! I want to see what Mister Sinister is up to. I want to see how Scott and Jean tell the rest of their mutant family about Baby Summers. I’m very interested to see how Wolverine reacts to the news.

I give this a 10 out of 10
