The Story:
Things are looking dire for Captain America’s young group of Defenders. If they are going to survive, let alone succeed, they are going to need help.
Steve has to attempt a dangerous mission on his own to get a valuable asset for the team but he may have bitten off more than he can chew…
The Writing:
Chip Zdarsky builds the tension as this story ramps up to bigger and bigger consequences. On top of creating a story that feels relevant to the times we live in, Zdarsky is also showing a master’s hand at good old fashioned spy thriller stories.
The writing in this feels more like a gritty thriller than it does a superhero story. The dialogue is quick and poignant and the situations that the characters find themselves in are dangerous and full of suspense.
I really feel like this Steve Rogers would be the natural progression of the character, given the world that Zdarsky is creating.
Everything about this story feels real and it also feels important as it deals with issues that modern Americans are facing.
The Art:
Daniel Acuna’s artwork continues to shine as the atmosphere of dread permeates every panel of this issue. The linework, inks, and colors all blend together to create a world full of darkness and fear.
As I’ve said before, this story is a cautionary tale and one that should have a weight to it.
The artwork is helping to provide that weight. Of course, Alex Ross’ beautiful covers continue to be a high point for this series.
The Verdict: 9/10
This story has been a wonderful, if wholly dark and depressing, read.
This is an important story to tell and another reason why comic books are so relevant to our society.
They give us a lens through which to view our world while also giving us the hope to keep fighting for a better tomorrow.
I am hopeful that we get to see a, somewhat, happy ending to this series but I am not holding my breath.
