Count Crowley – Mediocre Midnight Monster Hunter from Dark Horse Comics

This is the third miniseries volume of the Count Crowley horror series. The previous two are Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter, and Count Crowley: Amateur Midnight Monster Hunter. As evidenced by the title, our lead, Jerri, has upgraded to “mediocre.” We last saw her mourning her werewolf BFF/AA Sponsor, dealing with a monster hunter who seems more monster than hunter himself, falling off the wagon, and having no idea that things are about to get very busy in the monster hunting business.

Check out the review for part one.

The Story for #2

We kick off issue 2 with a very creepy and disturbing flashback from 1983. Before I could even process the level of creepy that was happening we’re brought back to modern day with a very hungover Jerri. While Jerri continues to wallow in self pity, she still manages to be badass at the same time, and she never forgets the bigger problem: monsters. While Jerri once again attempts to get her fellow monster hunter to work with her, he just continues to be vague, misogynistic, and act like he knows what’s best for everyone. All the while, he clearly knows more than he’s leading on. The level of creepiness in this issue just kept hitting new levels, however the “guy” in the ice cream truck wins creepiest. This issue leaves us wondering what exactly is about to happen. Yet knowing, it’s nothing good.

The Art

I absolutely love this art. It’s exactly what you would want out of a horror comic. It’s creepy, dark, and yet beautiful. The colors set the tone in such an incredible way. All the while, every page is filled with emotion and detail.

Count Crowley – Mediocre Midnight Monster Hunter #2 Rating: 8.25/10

Overall there was a lot going on in this issue, but it seemed to be too short at the same time. There are a lot of secrets going around, and a mystery that’s driving Jerri crazy. While everyone seems tough on Jerri, she is truly the epitome of her own worst enemy. You can see her potential if she could just get out of her own way. A sober non self deprecating Jerri could easily save the world, however, she’s got to realize that before it’s too late. All in all, if you love creepy campy horror with lots of mystery, then definitely get behind this comic.
