Plot Rundown:

Issue 5 kicks off explosively, with Dinah leading the crew in a race against time as they rush to save Sin, who the Megaera ingested. Harley shows her sentimental side mixed with her humor to bring up good points, such as the big bad guy usually having a flashy transformation sequence poking fun at the genre. Meanwhile, Harley’s suspicions are true as Sin is in a battle of conversation within the constructed walls, showing why she yearns to be something more without ever killing. We’re brought throughout Sin’s life, there is, quite frankly, a lot of reading that doesn’t exactly excite our villain. All the chatting pays off as Dinah can reach Sin, and the two frantically search for a way out of the maze of confusion within Megaera.

All is not as it seems, as it’s revealed that Sin wished for something more, thus inviting the vicious villain inside. The crew outside are battling a mind-controlled Wonder Woman in fierce combat, and the stakes have been raised. We are racing towards an epic battle for the fate of Sin as Canary hatches a plan, leaving us in a thrilling cliffhanger.

The Art:

This entire issue was a fun adventure and a testament to Deyn’s ability to create magic. Many very intricate lines and obstacles woven within our characters do a great job blending together without feeling “too busy.” The action in this issue stands out visually as a blend of colors and explosions showcasing every bird’s abilities independently and feeling powerful. The world within Magaera is drawn beautifully amongst a dark color palette that contrasts perfectly with the island outside.

The Writing:

Kelly’s fun and sarcastic writing style mashes up so well with her ability to make those sarcastic moments carry immense weight behind each word. One of the strengths behind this run is how well each character works together. They are each so vastly different in tone and personality, yet Kelly finds a way to make them truly work to their strengths within that team element. She understands and loves the characters in this rendition of the Birds, making for fun and exciting moments.

Overall:

Everyone works so well together in the creation of this fun story. Issue 5 peels back the curtain behind why Sin is under attack and delivers heartfelt and emotional moments, primarily with Harley, who brings so much heart. We are creeping closer to an epic battle that looms on the horizon, and this issue perfectly sets the scene for what’s to come.

9.5/10
