Plot:

The issue starts at the funeral of Lucy, who was a victim of Dracula in the previous issue, where it is now discovered there are more victims with the same symptoms as Lucy. We then see Seward failing to save another victim while the council begins to urge the help of Professor Van Helsing.

Mina sneaks in to visit Renfield, asking what is going on. Where he describes horrors and hell yet to come, Dracula sets out to turn Mina as Doctor Seward meets with Van Helsing, and the two decide they must hunt Dracula before he can unsully the pure souls within the city walls.

Art:

Simmonds continues to wow me by blending colors and pastels in this run. His art adds such a curious and horrifying mystique to the essence of the comic. Throughout this issue, some moments could be found hung by painting collectors in their houses or museums. I truly do not know if anyone else would have been able to make the art work the way Simmonds does.

The Writing:

Tynion continues to do what he does best, which is to build a sense of dread and create uneasiness within us with his words. This issue serves to set up a potential long-awaited battle on the horizon between Van Helsing and Dracula. I adore the slow build this comic is giving us.

Overall:

We are left with uneasiness and dread by the end of this issue. The blending of art and air of a slow burn the story is serving us works extraordinarily well. Skybound has a hit on its hands, which is going to carry into a strong campaign for the early 2024 comic of the year front-runner. There is a love letter to the Dracula lore being painted throughout which gives me excitement along with the creepy feeling and goosebumps I get with every page.

9.5/10
