Captain Marvel is tasked with bringing together a new team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!

The Story:

In the wake of Jason Aaron’s Multiversal crossover, The Avengers need to Assemble once again.

As the new chairperson, Captain Marvel runs down her short list of teammates, talking to a new member every day for a week leading to a showdown with Terminus as he launches an attack on Project Pegasus.

Carol and her new team have to work together to stop the threat with the conflict ending on a massive cliffhanger for what’s to come in this series.

Meet the New Team:

Captain Marvel – The Star

Iron Man – The Engineer

Thor – The God

Black Panther – The King

Captain America – The Icon

The Vision – The Construct

Scarlet Witch – The Witch

The Avengers Fight Terminus

The Writing:

Jed MacKay takes on the unenviable task of following a massive Avengers story that spanned multiple series and universes and knocks it out of the park with this first issue! This issue is perfectly paced and expertly crafted as the story of how the team came together is told as cutaways from the action set piece. Having Carol talk to each individual member was a great way to let the reader know where each Avenger is in their own story and why they are important to the team. The narrative device of the week leading up to Terminus’ attack allowed each character to get their moment in the spotlight.

Thor in all his glory!

The Artwork:

C.F. Villa’s art is stunning. The character designs were on point with each Avenger looking heroic and iconic. Thor and T’Challa really stood out to me in this issue, as the two characters with the most weight on their shoulders. Two kings that were portrayed here as two men dealing with past trauma and present stress, jaws set and ready to deal with the threat at hand. The panel layout, especially during the action sequences were a thing of beauty. To top off the art in this issue, Federico Blee’s colors took it to the next level! Truely breathtaking art in this book.

Final Thoughts:

This was a fantastic first issue! If you have been waiting for a time to jump onto an Avengers title, this is your chance. Solid writing, beautiful artwork, and what looks to be an intriguing story make this a must read. It has been a long time since I’ve read The Avengers every month but I’m happy to say that with this first issue I am in hook, line, and sinker!
