Tony Stark takes a trip down memory lane…
The Story:
The latest issue of The Invincible Iron Man takes a break from the main storyline to dive into an untold tale from Tony’s time with the West Coast Avengers. Iron Man faces off against a mind controlled Wonder Man, Hawkeye, Tigra, and Mockingbird during a test of the government’s latest mind control weapon. Tony is then tasked with delivering a device to block psionic attacks to Nick Fury and of course, things do not go as planned.
The Writing:
As always, Gerry Duggan’s work is stellar. In an issue that could be seen as “filler,” I was engaged and never felt like I was wanting to return to the “main storyline.” Also, he continues to impress with his ability to connect with long time readers with phrases like “I tend to remember stories not by which year they happened in, but by which armor I was wearing at the time.” That’s brilliant, that is how Iron Man fans remember Iron Man stories!
The Artwork:
We have a guest artist on issue #6, Andrea Di Vito. Just as with the rest of the series, the art is stunning. Sometimes I have a hard time when a book switches artists in the middle of a run but this artwork flowed perfectly and didn’t take me out of the story for a second! Not to mention, Di Vito draws a mean Silver Centurion armor, which is not one of my favorites but looked great in this issue!
Final Thoughts:
Overall, there is not a lot to say about this issue, it was a quick and enjoyable read. It feels like a middle chapter that is setting up things to come. I have no doubt that this was not a throw away story. This is simply a new thread that will be woven into the tapestry of Gerry Duggan’s overall story. Solid art, great writing, and a new story set during a popular time in Marvel Comics make this win and an easy recommendation. Go check out this series, you won’t regret it.
