The Last Mermaid and the Mutant Wastelands!

The Last Mermaid and Lottie find themselves in a moment of rest with full bellies as the enjoy camp with their new ally Torque. The Mermaid still has trouble trusting anyone in the wastelands, including their new travel companion.

Things get dire as they travel over mountains and cliffs, and the risk of falling to their deaths is at stake. Luckily, The Mermaid’s H.A.V.C. (or Hybrid Aquatic Vehicular Chamber) has the tools to avoid catastrophe.

However, something much more diabolical watches from a distant, cannibalistic mutants from a scouting party! The Mermaid and Torque will have to push themselves to the limit to stop them from returning to their group and making their presence known!

Derek Kirk Kim continues to expand his post apocalyptic world in this issue! The mutant people are wonderfully designed to look dangerous. One riding a bike and one riding a big cat shows that they are diverse and resourceful in terms of technology. We don’t see them speak much except for saying “mmm sushi”, but we know they’re smart and strategic.

Kim also continues to build the relationship between The Mermaid and Torque on this journey. The Mermaid puts herself in danger to save Torque from falling. As they chase the mutants, their ability to work together becomes stronger and more in tune.

Speaking of the mutant chase, that was a great sequence! Kim kicks up the action with a high speed chase. Each panel fell like an animation cell. If you were to cut the out and form a flip book, I imagine it would animate the scene in a thrilling way!

Everything Points to 8.8/10

Last issue was a philosophical lesson and this issue is back to fun and adventure! It’s a nice step to ramp up the action. The mutants are a great addition to everything else in this world that is deadly. To see more intelligent beings fleshes out the setting even more, adding a new layer. Kim’s art continues to be a great balance of beautiful and dangerous. He definitely knows how to ride that line with precision. Every issue ends in a some type of cliffhanger and this issue was no different. I’m thrilled to see the next installment!
