Zatanna is a low-profile trickster working the Las Vegas strip circuit, enjoying her quiet life. However, nothing stays quiet for too long, as she has noticed a regular stranger enjoying her show on multiple occasions.
Zatanna Bring Down the House thrusts us into the psychedelic world of magic where there is always more than meets the eye behind every flashy trick, and Zatanna must soon confront her long-repressed past.
The Art:
From the opening pages, this book offers a flashy, bright color palette that feels classic. The style reminds us of the newspaper comic days as Javier showcases extraordinary talent in each panel. Zatanna is known for magic, and the general dive into the weird and magical Javier stands tall to the task at hand.
There is so much detail behind just the main characters in focus throughout every poster and every wall. Javier manages to grasp the dead behind-the-eyes look that Vegas manages to bring out of people as they sit behind the slots for hours on end. There is a lot of eye-popping art in this first issue that immediately drew my attention.
The Writing:
Mariko brings Zatanna to a place we haven’t seen before by throwing her into a low-key life doing tricks for free in Las Vegas. There is mention of her father and a mysterious past and her turning down the Justice League at a point.
The story offers us a shroud of mystery through its characters and captures the spirit of what the dark and magical side of DC has to offer.
WELCOME BACK BATMAN
There is a particular page where Hassan manages to craft the letters within the art that leapt out from the page, showcasing his talent. Crafting the words into the details and bringing them to life was a nice cherry on top of the dessert we were fed this issue.
Overall:
I am a big fan of Zatanna, and it is a joy to see her brought back into a different light. Zatanna Bring Down the House takes us away from potential world-ending events and delivers us a potential small-scale story with big ramifications for her character.
It has so much detail packed into every panel you cannot help but stare for minutes at each one. If this is only the first issue I cannot wait to see what the team has in store for us.
