Uncanny Valley #3:

Issue 3 picks up directly where Issue 2 left off, with Oliver and his Grandpa on the run while Oliver continues searching for answers. Hot on their trail are cartoons out to do the First’s cruel work, descending this issue into chaos as the lines blur between reality and cartoon.

The Art:

This issue further pulls us into a warped reality and blends this cartoonish art style with a realistic approach. Wachter has hit his stride as he introduces new characters playing with various cartoon styles that we have seen across different pop-culture mediums. I enjoy it when Dave begins showcasing Oliver’s ability to create this alternate universe, an extension of him, and the way he seamlessly crafts these two art styles, which is a true masterpiece. This issue puts his talents on full display and clearly shows how much fun he is having as he is let loose across every panel.

The Writing:

Tony builds upon the mystery and rules outlined in the previous issues and blasts us out of a cannon into a thrilling issue full of adventure. Oliver and his abilities have been shrouded in mystery, and in this issue, Tony gives us a thread to pull on, showing just what can make him so special. I love that he is not afraid to step up and protect his grandfather in his time of need and the inclusion of new characters excites me even more.

Brosseau leans into the campy vibe given crafting the letters in a way that showcases the humor of it all and yet never stops also highlighting the peril our heroes are in.

Overall:

Uncanny Valley is building a universe full of wonder and adventure, leaning into the outrageous idea of cartoons coming to life and blending in an exciting story of action and adventure. Every kid dreams of fighting alongside their favorite cartoons, and Uncanny Valley allows us to let our imaginations run loose.
