Start Your Engines

S.I.R #1 opens with us meeting Avery Sakai, who is being welcomed to the prestigious Bridleham Academy. We find out Avery’s parents died in an accident and to get into the academy she wrote an essay about her story.

After getting settled Avery starts searching for a girl named Nico. She finally gets a tip from another student who calls Nico a “devil”. When Avery finds Nico, let’s just say it’s not as happy as she would hope.

After getting the cold shoulder and a warning Avery follows Nico to a coliseum. It is there that Avery discovers Nico is a motorcycle jouster known as Sir Ares! Sir Ares is undefeated and about to break a record that the powers that be are trying to stop. Unfortunately for Nico, they know about Avery and the relationship they have, which gets used against her.

“The Devil’s Reign”

S.I.R #1 is a good introduction to this world. You learn enough about the main characters to whet your appetite and get you wanting more.

The unique story featuring 2 girls with a special, yet mysterious relationship sets the table. That is even before you find out about motorcycle jousting. The action beats at the end give me Akira vibes.

The anime style art match the very Japanese style story and blend together seamlessly. Fell Hound crushes on both duties. The letters and colors are also on point and very vibrant. This creative team is just hitting homeruns.

Final Thoughts

I did not know what to expect when S.I.R #1 was sent to me to review. From the first page I found that I was intrigued by the story and attracted to the art. Solid first book that makes me want to follow this story to its conclusion. If you like the anime style, this book should be added to your pull list too.

Final Grade: 8.5/10
