Top 10 Most Antcipted Comics for the Week of 9/18/2024

0

It cannot be an accident. One week every month we get a week like this where we have an explosion of new titles debuting. I could have easily just done a Top 10 of Most Antipcate new #1’s. Instead, I just focused on the ones I was most excited about. Looking back at this list I did not realize how much Image dominates this week. That was not on purpose. They are simply just putting out a lot of great books right now. Kudos to them for that.

With that onto this week’s list

(Editor’s Note: Solicitations are provided by Respected Publishers)

10. Babs #2

Writer: Garth Ennis

Artist: Jacen Burrows

Publisher: Ahoy

Solicitation: Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows’ sword-and-satire epic thickens as the barbarian thief Babs is forced into an awkward confrontation with the skeletal Lord of the Undead and his equally un-deceased queen! Meanwhile, a misogynist goblin schemes to get revenge on Babs.

Why it Made the List: As I mentioned on this list a few times the current slate of comics is filled with a ton of Fantasy books, and the battering average of good vs bad is pretty high. Now we get to add another one to that list that will drive up that average. This series is able to find space within a crowded genre by being more of a spoof comedy in the style of Garth Ennis. Is this to the fantasy genre the same way The Boys is to the superhero genre? Not quite…at least so far. It’s a bit more tame compared to some of the shocking things that occurred in that book. Not that it is void of shocking moments. The last issue felt like Garth Ennis getting his chance to comment on what’s been annoying him in the world of fandom over the last few years, including using actual trolls to represent the worst of fandom culture. Not that this is just commentary without a story. The satirical elements are woven within the actual narrative quite well with plenty of fun sword and sand adventure.

9. Resurgence #1

Writer: Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad

Artist: Guillermo Fajardo

Publisher: Alien Books / Valiant

Solicitation: Prepare to see the unexpected: the rise of Dr. Silk, once an infamous villain, now a beacon of hope. He brings forth radical ideas of a utopian world where death is no longer a part of the human experience.

Many people will see him as a leader of peace and change, while others question his actions as everything has a cost, and Earth starts to break into different realities. With the help of Master Darque, Silk makes his silent magical/technological attack on the Faraway, causing many sinkholes to appear and panicking the world. Conflicts break out. War emerges…

Dr. Silk and his weavers craft webs of eternal life in a world shattered. Can our heroes navigate this new world order? The battle lines are drawn, and the only question is whose side you will be on when the dust settles – featuring X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Eternal Warrior, Ninjak, Ivar, Rai, Livewire, Faith, and more!

Crafted by the stellar team of Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, (X-O Manowar Unconquered, Immortal Wonder Woman), and new rising star artist Guillermo Fajardo, the Valiant Universe will never be the same!

Why it Made the List: Do not call it a come back call it a Resurgence. As a fan of Valiant comics, I find it has been a hard few years as the publisher has tried to sustain itself. Several series were canceled and others ended early. I have found this Resurgence initiative a bit mixed thus far but I still have hope in this event. My first experience with the Valiant universe was a similar event so maybe this can be the story to bring this universe back to its greatest heights. Valiant characters are very distinct within their own worlds so when they do come together it feels special, especially since it does not happen all the time. The preview art looks good as well, which was a problem with some of the most recent issues. If this can iron out some of these past missteps Valiant Comics can make this Resurgence a reality.

8. Lilith #1

Writer/Artist: Corin Howell

Publisher: Vault

Solicitation: Lilith is an immortal who’s been banished from her home, a dimensional plane suspiciously similar to mankind’s idea of Hell. She’s been posing as a model on Earth while secretly preying on humans… that is, until she runs into Penelope, a sweet bookstore owner with a tome that might hold the secret to returning Lilith to her dimension. If the mismatched pair doesn’t end up falling in love first! “Watch out, boy, she’ll chew you up.”

Why it Made the List: I get a little extra excited for a comic when I see the writer and artist are the same person. There are not many of those so when it happens it is something special. (Although it will happen again later on within this list) As mentioned on this list om previous weeks Vault Comics has introduced me to a lot of great artists throughout the years. In this case, though I have enjoyed Corin Howell’s work in the past before picking up this book. Specifically, the series she did with Tim Seeley Dark Red was the first time I noticed her work. That was a book that took its own spin on Vampire lore so I already know she did do well with similar material. Wondering how different this will be since this is one specific voice. Considering how well Corin Howell designed that cover I have faith that this will be one great-looking series.

7. The Tin Can Society #1

Writer: Peter Warren

Artist: Francesco Mobili

Publisher: Image Comics

Solicitation: The first stunning issue of a brand-new miniseries from Giant Generator showcasing the first comics work by screenwriter and incredible talent PETER WARREN (_The Incal _feature film, Kill Me) with jaw-dropping art by FRANCESCO MOBILI (X-Men, SCUMBAG) and beautifully colored by CHRIS CHUCKRY (New X-Men, Gen 13).

Johnny Moore is a world-famous tech mogul known as much for his work pioneering mobility aids for people with disabilities (like himself) as he is for moonlighting as the metal-suited vigilante, CALIBURN. But when Johnny is found murdered and his suit stolen, his estranged childhood best friends reunite to solve the mystery of his murder.

THE TIN CAN SOCIETY is a heartfelt and human look at the evolution of friendships across a lifetime, at disability and ableism, and the destructive power of fame.

Why it Made the List: Usually when a comic is written by a screenwriter who is making their debut in comics it is usually a major red flag. That may be unfair but you can often tell you are reading a comic that was designed to be a movie script. When that happens it is typically not a great experience because the script does not understand the language of comic books. What is different here is this is part of Rick Remender’s new Imprint for Image comics. There are few people I trust in comics more than Remender. He’s got a great eye for story, talent, and art so based on that excited to see what this could lead towards. Kudos to Remender who is using his stance as a creator to push forward other talent he believes in. It reminds me of wrestling when an established talent will use their place to put over another talent and when done right everyone wins in the end.

6. X-Men #4

Writer: Jed MacKay

Artist: Netho Diaz

Publisher: Marvel

Solicitation: THEY KILL FOR KICKS & THEY KILL FOR CLICKS! “Hello, internet – it’s your boy, Trevor Fitzroy! That’s right, Trevor Fitzroy and the Upstarts, out there delivering the content you crave: livestreamed, bespoke, mutant murder in high-def! And best of all, you, the viewers, are the ones rating the kills! So smash that like button, hit subscribe and tell us who the number-one killer is!”

Why it Made the List: From my perspective, it does seem there is a major split in the X-Men fan community. Those who are still upset with the end of the Krakoa era and others who are happy it has ended. This current X-Men run has been much more straightforward than what we got with Krakoa but I believe it is shaping up rather nicely. I do not love the fact we already have an artist change this quickly into this run. No offense to Netho Diaz, it is more that I feel comics are better when they have more consistency especially when you are still within the same arc. What has worked with me the most with this run thus far is the characterization of Cyclops. He’s been bold in his proclamations but we also see there’s something serious that he is hiding. Plus Juggernaut has been a fun addition as well. This run may not have the thematic depth of some of the Krakoa era, but it does feel like classic X-Men to me and I do not think that is a bad thing.

5. Ultramega #5

Writer/Artist: James Harren

Publisher: Image Comics

Solicitation:  Following the devastating events in volume one, Noah takes on the Ultramega mantle from his father, but will he be able to save the world…or has the world been doomed from the start?

When Kaiju invaded Earth, three humans were granted the power of Ultramega to save humanity…They failed. Now, a new Ultramega has risen in this brutal world without heroes or hope. But the Kaiju Queen isn’t the only challenge he must face. Deep in the stars, they gather. Psychotic. Cold. A WORLD of ULTRAMEGA.

Why it Made the List: Wait…is this real? My reaction when seeing Ultramega has a new issue coming out this week. My second surprise was realizing it had been three years since the last issue. Crazy how time works. As I mentioned with Lilith I am a big fan of Writer/Artists and James Harren is one of today’s best as seen with the previous volume. So I understand why it can take so long for this to come out when everything is in the hands of one person. I rather creators take the time they need than rush something out just to get it out.  You can tell he is a fan of Kaijua and monsters as this feels like a love letter to those types of stories. I do hope there is some recap from volume one since it has been so long but I cannot tell you anything in depth about the story. I do remember rather enjoying the first volume a great deal. Now let’s see if the second volume can be just as successful.

4. The Power Fantasy #2

Writer: Kieron Gillen

Artist: Caspar Wijngaard

Publisher: Image Comics

Solicitation: There are six people who can save the world. They save the world every day they don’t use their powers. Yesterday, one used their gift. The world is still here. Have we been lucky, or has the fuse to end us all been lit?

Why it Made the List: I recently did a video on how I believe there is no such thing as an overpowered character, and used this comic as an example of why. The characters in this have the power of literal gods and could cause massive structures with a single thought, yet it was able to tell a compelling story. In this case, these characters are clearly being used as an allegoric exploration into the idea of a nuclear deterrent. Also the ethical issues of what is right and wrong when so much power is at your fingertips. I could see some taking issue with how lofty the goals are here and how the story can leave you a bit cold. We did not get much into who these people are beyond the role they play with their powers, however I assume that is coming in upcoming issues. I was simply impressed with what is being built here and how they found a new way to use superpowers to tell a story regarding some thought-provoking issues. If you like books that make you think this is certainly a read to check out.

3. The Moon Is Following Us #1

Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson

Artist: Riley Rossmo

Publisher: Image Comics

Solicitation: Sam and Duncan LaMarr love their six-year-old daughter, Penny, more than anything in the whole world. But half a year ago, she was taken by the Cascade, an evil force they barely understand. Now, Sam and Duncan must fight side by side with the magical beings Penny cherished to try and get her back…before she’s gone forever.

Why it Made the List: What a creative team. I never put these two creators together in my mind but when I saw this book it clicked so well. Their styles are different but both have an energetic feel with bold and brash design. Both are coming off some really great work as well. Daniel Warren Johnson is killing it right now with the Transformers books, and Riley Rossmo’s work on the recent Wesley Dodd: Sandman book was some of the best of his career. This concept clicks with me as well because any time you have parents trying to rescue their kids my emotional investment is immediately there. Everything is coming together for a really good series.

2. Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #31

Writer: Mark Waid

Artist: Adrián Gutiérrez

Publisher: Marvel

Solicitation:  A BRAND-NEW ARC BEGINS, AS RISING STAR ARTIST ADRIAN GUTIERREZ JOINS MARK WAID! DARKNESS FALLS! Eclipso, master of light and shadow, has risen to plague the World’s Finest team of Superman and Batman! Powered like never before, Eclipso threatens to plunge the Earth into a state of eternal night–and eternal despair!

Why it Made the List: It’s always a good week when  Batman / Superman: World’s Finest is coming out. I am enjoying Absolute Power but it is nice to have a book that can operate completely outside of it. Usually, when Dan Mora is not on art duties my excitement is not as high but I saw the preview pages Adrián Gutiérrez has done, and wow are they something special. Mora may want to watch himself because Gutiérrez is showing what he can do, and he appears to have the chops to keep this book as good as ever. This series has been pure DC in the best of ways. Superheroes being superheroes and not much more than that. Why does that work? Well, because the truth is that is all you need.

1-Ice Cream Man #41

Writer: W. Maxwell Prince

Artist: Martin Morazzo

Publisher: DC Comics

Solicitation: “SPY STORY”

A who-can-you-trust thriller, both shaken and stirred!

Why it Made the List: With Ice Cream Man you never know what you are going to get. Well…I guess that is not fully true because you know you are going to get a great comic. I am amazed at how much this series has evolved over the years. This started as a horror anthology series and now is so much more. The last two issues focused on decompressed storytelling in some of my favorite issues of the year thus far. Now we are getting a spy story. What does that mean? I have no idea and I love everything about that. Will it have a horror twist? It’s possible, or maybe it will just be a reflection of that genre in comic book form. If you have not read an issue of this book that is okay. You can pick up this issue and be just fine, and if you end up liking it you have forty other great issues to read.

‘Tulsa King’ Season 2 Review: Stallone At His Best

0

This review was made possible by advance screeners of the first three episodes of Tulsa King Season 2. Tulsa King Season 2 premieres on Paramount+ on Sunday, September 15th with one episode. New episodes will air every Sunday.

If you need a new fix of mafia, mobsters and gangsters to grace the screens in the comforts of your own home, may I recommend to you Tulsa King. The series was created by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown) and is written by Terence Winter (The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire). Beware slight spoilers for Season 1 lie ahead.

The series follows Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) a mafia capo that was just released from prison after serving nearly two decades for taking the fall for the good of the family. How is he rewarded for his service? He is exiled from NYC to Tulsa, Oklahoma to set up a new territory. To everyone’s surprise but his own, he walks right in and starts building his new empire in the country.

LET’S MEET THE SQUAD

Right in his Uber ride from the airport, Dwight hires his first employee Tyson (Jay Hill) as his driver and righthand man. He then partners up with a dispensary ran by Bodhi (Martin Starr) and a local bar owned by Mitch Keller (Garrett Hedlund). As he cuts ties with the family back home now ran by Chickie (Domenick Lombardozzi) after his father passed, Dwight gets old friend Goodie Carangi (Chris Caldovino) on his side along with a man who thought he escaped his past in New York, Armand Truisi (Max Casella).

With his new team in place Dwight wastes no time stacking up piles of money and making a name for himself. He’s a charming fellow, pair that with confidence, success and money and people will flock to you. Sometimes those people ending up being an ATF agent, who later realize she slept with a massive crime boss. And this is where Season 2 picks up.

LEGAL TROUBLE & NEW ENEMIES

Season 2 of Tulsa King starts with Dwight facing legal issues. That’s not his only problem, western mob boss Bill Bevilaqua (Frank Grillo) and local businessman Cal Thresher (Neal McDonough) have a massive problem with Dwight taking a piece of their pie. As you can guess, a few bumps in the road isn’t stopping the boss man from building his empire. The problem is his new enemies aren’t giving up without a fight either.

The series is filled with shoot outs and bareknuckle brawls that are exciting, but the biggest plus is Sylvester Stallone’s performance. He plays the straight man, tough guy with a heart of gold role incredible as we all know, but Dwight Manfredi is different. He’s insanely intelligent, always seems to be two steps ahead of his adversaries. To top it off, his lack of knowledge of technology and relevant pop culture from being in jail for so long makes for some great laughs that feel genuine and not corny. Even with the laughs, you always see him learning and adapting when it’s something he’s unfamiliar of.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If you’re missing The Sopranos, Tulsa King may be your new obsession. Is it as good? No, but it’s a great fish out of water story and some of the best work of Stallone’s career. It’s funny, surprising and not scared to get bloody when things get messy. I’ve only seen three episodes of this season, but it promises to be an explosive follow up in this mafia saga.

TRANSFORMERS #12 – NO TURNING BACK NOW

0
TRANSFORMERS #12 by DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON, JORGE CORONA, MIKE SPICER AND RUS WOOTEN (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the Decepticons are on the verge of final victory. Soundwave has led a precise attack onto Earth. The new “head of the table” has been serving nothing but pain and suffering. Optimus Prime and any others who would cross his path have found little hope. A final play has been called to thwart the new regime. Is it too late?

TRANSFORMERS #12 by DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON, JORGE CORONA, MIKE SPICER AND RUS WOOTEN (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment) brings readers to the conclusion of its’ second arc!

Let’s see how the Energon Universe is left after this!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Johnson has systematically broken Optimus Prime with his writing. For this closing chapter, Prime hits his final points. Readers watch as he unleashes the pent-up anger on his over-confident foes. The result shows a role-reversal. No longer the stoic leader. Johnson replaces him with someone looking to end events once and for all. The change in persona leads to a drastic measure taken. It becomes a polarizing moment for the legendary head of the Autobots.

Prime’s stance causes some friction with his allies from Cybertron. Elita and Prime’s dialogue brings forth many old emotions. Defending Earth doesn’t register with Prime’s old ally and choices are made. Johnson ramps up the drama in this section. Its’ build presents readers with an impactful conclusion. The ramifications of the latest stand undoubtably leaves a massive cloud hanging over head. As one door has closed, another one has completely swung open.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Corona and Spicer continue to shine with the fantastic artwork. Carly’s valiant effort to help pops off the half page panel. It’s given a perfect complimentary image of Cliffjumper smiling in approval to her actions. Pacing speeds events up to a thunderous stopping point. A half page image unveils the destruction that has just transpired. This becomes the starting point for Optimus Prime to become unleashed.

The art team leaves nothing back as Prime delivers his frustration onto the Decepticons. One in particular scene drops a huge exclamation point within the pages. Seeing Prime’s eyes switch colors for this action was a great touch. It left readers no doubt that something out of character just happened.

Another excellent moment is the conversation with Elita and Prime. The art team encases the bursting emotions to give the ultimate choice made more gravity. This leads to an excellent full page splash! With Prime’s guilty narration, the closing image will have readers talking as to the fate of the Energon Universe’s alien protectors.

FINAL GRADE: 9.6

With its’ second arc coming to a show-stopping finale, Johnson, Corona and the team present readers with an intense read. Johnson’s writing pushes Optimus Prime to new heights. Corona, Spicer and Wooten construct amazing imagery as a new stat quo appears on the horizon.

ASTONISHING TIMES: RISE OF THE KOKIN #5 by Frank J. Barbiere & Arris QuinonesRuairi Coleman, Reese Hannigan, Andrew CramerTaylor Esposito and Dylan Todd (Comixology Originals)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, readers have arrived at the conclusion of a mysterious origin. The world of Astonishing Times has had fans talking since 2021. It is a fantastic read for any superhero fan. One character has broken out from the pack in that series. The story behind the dangerous Kokin has reached its’ final destination in this closing chapter.

ASTONISHING TIMES: RISE OF THE KOKIN #5 by Frank J. Barbiere & Arris Quinones, Ruairi Coleman, Reese Hannigan, Andrew Cramer, Taylor Esposito and Dylan Todd looks to wrap up loose ends before departing.

Let’s take a closer look at how things fare now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Coleman fills the pages with a sense of danger and deceit. Yuto’s scheming comes to a head with a power play made by the Kokin. It instantly creates the uneasiness while waiting for the next move to be made. Pacing keeps things moving at a very fast level. It matches the frenetic action now kicking into high gear.

DON’T MISS THE TOP 10!

The writing sets up a duel that isn’t short on its’ shock. Once the winner is about to proclaim victory, Kokin’s dialogue gives a few key quotes before ending it with a loud exclamation point. The fallout ties up most loose ends, with a few heartstring pulling pages. It has been quite a journey seeing how the Kokin has evolved since day one. Knowing that key component will kickstart some interest to go back and read Astonishing Tales is a big win for all.

Coleman, Hannigan and the art team give readers one last chapter flooded with action. Yuto and Kokin’s build before its’ eventual showdown captures Yuto’s cockiness. It camouflages the challenge thrown down. At this stage, the action is in full swing. The showdown is met with a violent ending. Before bowing out, the art team brings the emotional wear of the Kokin to the forefront. Events close with a familiar face and wondering if this is the end or the end…for now?

FINAL GRADE: 8.3

The thrilling saga of the Kokin comes to a show-stopping end with its’ blend of excitement and drama. Coleman crafts an excellent wrap-up with the writing. The art team never falters on giving readers big action before mixing in the strong drama fueling this series since day one. If action stories are your specialty, there’s no way you can afford to pass on this story.

Captain America #13 – The Last Enemy That Shall Be Defeated

0
Captain America #13 – Courtesy: Marvel (cover: Taurin Clarke)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue in the Captain America line from J. Michael Straczynski & Marvel!

This issue is a continuation of the storyline that has seen Captain America fighting against destiny & death itself. And it’s been Cap’s toughest test yet, but will he be able to emerge victorious? Let’s jump into it!

Captain America #13 by J Michael Straczynski (writer), Carlos Magno (artist), Espen Grundetjern (color artist), VC’s Joe Caramagna (letterer), Taurin Clarke (cover artist) picks up right where issue #12 left off.

Captain America & his team up against the citizens of New York City as Death himself has turned everyday people against our heroes. It’s a compelling issue that feels like a classic Captain America story out of the silver age of comics.

The issue revolves around Cap & his team trying to accomplish their end goal, to stop death and save the day. Of course the big issue at the forefront is that they’re everyday civilians, despite their eager willingness to fight the heroes, they don’t know what they’re fully doing.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW

The battle to get through the civilians is an action packed one, and is an impressive bit of artwork. And the battle that follows with death is one that is more memorable ones in recent history. And it’s a battle that has all the markings of a classic Cap fight. Impossible odds, an even more impossible enemy, and a bleak outcome. But it’s just so good of a battle.

My favorite part of the issue is the battle sequences in the issue. It feels like something you might see in an animated movie or in the MCU with Chris Evans in a non-Avengers film. The artwork is also awesome and I really can’t emphasize just how good the story is.

FINAL POINT: This is the final issue in the story of Cap vs Death, and it’s a fitting end to a good story. It’s been a fun one that has been a real pleasure to read with each release. And the tease at the end of the issue is very intriguing to see just how it plays out and what it could mean. This issue is a fun read, and one that I think is worth picking up for any fan. It’s a story that’s pretty straight forward and is stellar from start to finish.

Score: 8.8 out of 10

Amazing Spider-Man #57 – A Dynamic, Thrilling Issue

0

Amazing Spider-Man #57:

Ripped right out of the script for a “Law & Order” episode, the Tombstone is rotting in jail after Spider-Man was able to call on the help of some friends to assist in his capture of the new NYC King of Crime.

But the twist no one saw coming is Tombstone’s own daughter Janice is testifying against him in his trial??

Cue Dick Wolf because we have a TV hit on our hands!

Credit: Marvel Ent

Writer: Zeb Wells

Artist: John Romita Jr.

Inker: Scott Hanna

Letters: VC’S Joe Caramagna

Color Artist: Marcio Menyz

Cover Artists: John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna and Morry Hollowell

PUBLISHER: Marvel Comics

The Art:

John Romita Jr. is a Marvel legend through and through. What makes this kind of gritty issue so special for JR is that his art has always had the kind of quality that is perfect for a tense, criminal drama like this current ASM run.

The gruff faces, the scowls, the Sin City style all play to Romita’s strengths and this crime drama that just happens to have Spider-Man at the center of everything.

There are subtle nuances in the faces of the characters and inflections that only a seasoned pro like JR could do so effortlessly. It’s really a Marvel masterclass.

The Writing:

Zeb kicks off the issue with the classic jailhouse convo between Spidey and Tombstone. One that ends with a shocking twist.

Within the first 10 pages, you know we are heading towards a real clash of the titans.

Later in the issue, we get a full-on scene from “Heat,” again making this issue something out of a movie or TV show.

Say what you want about Zeb’s Spidey run, but his background in TV writing makes him prime to helm an issue with this much gravitas.

The twists and turns here truly make this one of the best Spider-Man issues I’ve read in quite some time. Yeah I said it!

Overall: 9/10

THIS IS A GREAT ISSUE.

You may not love the latest run of ASM, but you have to appreciate this issue and the action, surprises and much more it delivers.

The ending leaves you speechless and you know next month’s issue is going to be make or break for our main characters.

Take a bow Zeb and JR, masterfully done!

NINJAK VS. ROKU #4 – THE LAST CHANCE TO FIGHT

0
NINJAK VS ROKU #4 by AJ Ampadu, Diego Giribaldi, Lautaro Ftuli, and Camila Jorge (Valiant Comics/Alien Books) Cover: Richard Ortiz

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the super spies of the Valiant Universe have arrived at their final showdown. Colin King was left on Death’s doorstep. Roku is a fractured shell of herself through grueling combat. Who will be the ultimate victor when the smoke clears?

NINJAK VS ROKU #4 by AJ Ampadu, Diego Giribaldi, Lautaro Ftuli, and Camila Jorge is the final stop on the “Road To Resurgence”.

Let’s take a closer look to see how events conclude.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ampadu mixes in a few surprises while closing out events for Mr. King and company. The opening sequence does a solid build into the first reveal. Readers will see a shift in direction as Ninjak crashes the scene.

The explanation of how he recovers is a unique concept. It plays into the mystical subplot looming with the Undead Monk. Ninjak is redefined from the experience which helps for what lies ahead.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Pacing never takes a break as the story progresses. Readers get locked in for the showdown as the action pops off the pages. Ampadu constructs a steady build until the final blow is dealt. Its’ fallout deescalates slowly for the key players to each get their parting shots in. The ending is a fitting conclusion before the next crossover event. It is one that lives up to the bar that can only set from Valiant’s super spy.

Giribaldi and Ftuli deliver stellar imagery as the showdown commences. The full page shot of Ninjak entering the scene grabs readers right away. It’s matched by a few full splashes as Ninjak rebuilds his pysche. The panels present a deep dive into a broken soul. Readers will see how things unfold as Ninjak finally is ready for the last face-off.

The action panels never waiver on the excitement. Its’ paced with an energetic feel. Action fans will be very pleased at the final product. The pages flow very easy to the parting image. Ninjak’s closing action is gifted a near full page shot that concludes an impressive thrill ride once and for all.

FINAL GRADE: 8.2

The final stop before Resurgence doesn’t miss its’ mark with a solid ending for the one and only Colin King. Ampadu’s writing conveys a battle of wills and skills. Giribaldi and Ftuli craft excellent action through a chaotic backdrop. It’s a fitting addition to the legacy of Valiant’s definitive Super Spy.

Hit me up on ODPHpod social media and let me know your thoughts on Ninjak vs. Roku #4. Thanks for reading!

Batman and Robin #13 – A Thrilling, Emotional Finale for the Dynamic Duo

0
Credit DC Comics

In Batman and Robin #13, Joshua Williamson wraps up his run with a high-stakes adventure on Dinosaur Island, where Batman, Robin, and Bane face a deadly force intent on keeping them trapped. The issue balances thrilling action with introspective moments as Damian narrates the events to his school counselor, building tension while reflecting on his growth as a character. Will this be the last adventure for Gotham’s father-son duo, or can they fight their way home?

Creative Team: Joshua Williamson (Writer), Juan Ferreyra (Art and Colors), Steve Wands (Letters)

The Writing:

Williamson delivers a fantastic conclusion to his run with this creative team. The pacing is a standout, particularly with the parallel narrative structure of Damian recounting the events to his counselor, which serves as both a framing device and emotional anchor. Each time we return to the school scene, it creates a moment of pause, allowing readers to process the escalating tension and the emotional weight of the unfolding story.

The emotional beats hit hard, especially in the father-son interactions. Williamson captures the complex relationship between Batman and Robin, showcasing Damian’s growth throughout the arc. The finale, which highlights Damian’s evolution through his struggles, is heartfelt and deeply satisfying. The dialogue is sharp and impactful, delivering the perfect balance of introspection and action. This is a story that will resonate with readers, young and old, due to its exploration of family, growth, and resilience.

Check out Issue 12 Review Here!

Credit DC Comics

The Art, Colors and Layouts:

Juan Ferreyra’s art is spectacular in this issue, particularly in how he uses color to reflect Damian’s emotional journey. The scenes with the guidance counselor begin with muted tones, but as Damian recounts the story, the colors become more vibrant, symbolizing his resolution of inner conflict. By the final page, the colors burst with life, reflecting Damian’s newfound clarity and hope.

Ferreyra’s rendering of the emotional beats between Bruce and Damian is stunning. Their facial expressions, enhanced by strategic lighting and color choices, feel almost cinematic in their intensity. Every panel builds the emotional tension leading to the story’s climax.

One of the most innovative moments is the splash page of Damian and Batman swinging through Gotham. It’s a masterful tribute to their journey throughout this run and beyond, with past key moments subtly integrated into the background. This is visual storytelling at its finest, and it adds a profound depth to the issue.

Steve Wands’ lettering is precise and effective, guiding the reader’s eye through the emotional beats and action sequences without distraction. His work enhances the overall flow, never overpowering the art but seamlessly complementing it.

Final Thoughts:

Batman and Robin #13 is a near-perfect issue that showcases the talents of its entire creative team. With an emotionally resonant narrative, stunning visuals, and pitch-perfect pacing, this issue is a must-read for fans of the dynamic duo. Joshua Williamson’s final chapter is a fitting tribute to Damian’s growth, leaving readers with a sense of closure while honoring the legacy of Batman and Robin.

Overall Grade 9.8 out of 10

Red Before Black #2 – Internal Conflicts

0

Welcome to Florida!

From BOOM! Studios: Red Before Black #2

  • Writer: Stephanie Phillips
  • Artist: Goran Sudžuka
  • Colorist: Ive Svocrina
  • Letterer: Tom Napolitano

Previously (Spoilers for issue #1)

Red Before Black #2 Main Cover by Goran Sudžuka & Ive Svorcina from BOOM! Studios.

In issue number one we’re introduced to Val (Valeria Morel) who just got out of prison and is looking to get employment from a drug trafficker named Miles. Miles knows Val from their time together in the Army. Val has no leverage except for her good looks, her skillset and the fact that Miles owes her a favor.

Miles knows she’s capable, and he’s currently in a position of weakness, because of Leo (Leonora), a former employee of his. Apparently, Leo stole merchandise from Miles and is now trying to sell it for her own profit to Miles’ regular customers, directly undermining his business and reputation. Miles wants Leo taken care of, so he decides to send a message of zero tolerance by ordering a hit on Leo. If Val can fix this problem for him, she’s in the game.

The Wild Card

Leo is a clear opposite of Val. She’s wild, high energy, unpredictable and possibly on a death wish. When these two met, it was instantly a mess. Val found Leo inside a nightclub on the run from a disgruntled customer.

When Val saw Leo in trouble, she jumped in to save her. We got to see how skilled and capable Val’s hand-to-hand combat is. However, we also get to see that Val has a heavy case of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), that’s triggered by violence. Val’s PTSD is manifested with an incredible and vivid vision of a jungle, with cries for help. Val snapped out of her visions, but she had already completely beat Leo’s assailant unconscious.

What would you do for your Freedom?

Finally, late in the story we’re introduced to the last player in the story (so far), Charles Lamb. Lamb is the person responsible for getting Val out of prison. A deal was made in which Val would infiltrate Miles’ criminal organization and helped bring it down in exchange for her freedom. Val has reservations about how far she’s willing to go, drawing the line at murder. Lamb, on the other hand, is more than okay with murder and whatever else it takes to fight crime.

Actions speak louder than words!

Red Before Black #2 B Cover by Dave Johnson from BOOM! Studios.

Issue number 2 expands on the character of Valeria Morel significantly. She might be a convict and a disgraced army veteran, but she’s a courageous person who acts when others are in need, without hesitating. Val is in a compromised position which she has to negotiate her morals and values for her freedom.

Val’s internal conflict is in full display in this issue when she goes to meet with Leo in broad daylight in a dinner called Jimmy’s (literally an allegory for a “Waffle House” in Florida). Although, Valo shows up with the intentions to terminate Leo to gain favor with Miles, she is hesitant. It could be because, despite Leo’s wild nature, she is very charismatic and deceptively smart.

What about the art?

Arty by Goran Sudžuka, Ive Svocrina & Tom Napolitano from Red Before Black (BOOM! Studios)

Goran Sudžuka’s pencils are exceptionally sharp. There’s a certain feel to this world that gives early 2000’s visuals. He can draw violence not just with the action of the characters but with the way the scenes are structure as well. Sudžuka is able to hide Leo’s demeanor under a happy-go-lucky unassuming victim persona. In the very next panel Leo’s wild and unpredictable nature surfaces on her facial expressions.

Along with Ive Svorcina’s coloring, this book tackles in a very graphic visual way, how PTSD can affect the human mind. We can clearly see how pain and violence isn’t the only way PTSD is triggered. Sounds, words, or specific noises can take Val from sanity to lunacy in one single page, one panel at a time. I appreciate the way this subject is addressed.

I give this issue a 9 out of a 10

This issue slowed down the craziness enough for the story to simmer and allowed the characters to develop more. However, when it’s time to escape into lunacy, it pulls you in fast and hard with ease. The art is also very exceptional and matches the pacing of the story. I highly recommend it.

The Candle’s Flame

We start with our main character, Joy, who’s a psychologist giving a lecture on depression. She makes a powerful comparison of someone dealing with depression to a burning candle being suffocated by a dark cover. As it turns out, Joy is very familiar with the comparison as she knows the what it’s like to feel suffocated by depression. We learn that Joy is separated from her husband, Colson, and she isn’t taking it too well. Crying and drinking at her house, Joy is watching videos of her wedding and just as she gets to the officiant completing the ceremony, the phone rings.

Joining Forces

Speaking of the devil, it’s her estranged husband, Colson, on the other line. Colson is calling because he needs Joy’s help as a psychologist, and even though she doesn’t want to do it, she agrees to help when he says he will sign the divorce papers. As it happens, Colson already has a plane waiting to take Joy to Alaska to help him and his team.

Upon arriving, Joy learns that there is a patient that the team has absolutely no information on that they desperately need. Who are they? Where did they come from? And are they being truthful or are they just out of their minds? It’s up to Joy to find all this out in a timely fashion as there moving parts that could end in catastrophe.

Joy meets with who the team has named Artemis, and she’s much more than Joy bargained for. Artemis knows everything about Joy, all the way down to what her lecture was about from the beginning of the comic. Come to find out, this young woman came out of the black hole the scientists have created. The questions still stand; who is she, where did she come from, and how does she know all of this?

The Art

Chris Shehan does a fantastic job throughout Dark Empty Void #1 setting the tone for this sci-fi thriller right off the bat. Each panel has such an abundance of detail, you can see each facial expression on each of the characters faces. That matched with the colors by Francesco Segala really has you hooked by the first page. I think they both did an incredible job bringing the plot to life and keeping your eyes hooked onto each page.

The Writing

I was instantly hooked when I started reading Dark Empty Void #1. The story is compelling right from the start, and keeps you wanting more as the story continues. You find yourself relating to Joy as she gives lectures on depression while she is going through the struggle herself. The characters are easy to connect with while still maintaining mystery as you learn more about them. I’m not usually one for sci-fi thrillers, but Dark Empty Void #1 was fantastic all around. Can’t wait for the next installment!

I give this a 10 out of 10
