Writing

Shawn: I really enjoy what Daniel Freedman has done with The Witcher: Blood Stone. The series has done an amazing job maintaining the “small-town mystery” vibe, as well capturing the side quest vibes from the Witcher 3. Freedman perfectly encapsulates a pretty common formula in The Witcher where Geralt enters a community that ends up being more dangerous than the monster he was fired to kill.

With this style of narrative, Freedman does a really great job capturing the moral gray area of the lesser evils. Geralt’s pragmatic approach really clashes not only with human stubbornness but with mystical influence in this issue. While I expect high fantasy from a series based on The Witcher, Freedman’s story feels both true to the roots of The Witcher and also more psychological folk horror. The story isn’t about the hunt, but mass hysteria. Freedman paces the story perfectly through occasional sparse dialogue, increasing the tension in the conflict.

Travis: The writing for this third issue continues to hold the same power and impact as the previous two issues that came before it! The plot continues to thicken as the script takes you further into the drama that is taking place. The dialogue embraces an Irish tone that makes you generate an accent when reading along.

Art

Shawn: The Witcher: Blood Stone continues to be one of the most beautiful series I have read this year. Pius Bak and Roman Titov deserve all the flowers for just how beautiful this series has been. I would love to see the raw panels from Bak without color just to better appreciate the shading and lines.

As great as Freedman’s story is, the sparse dialogue supported by the eerie, and at times dark colors, really sell the story. This creative team is interacting beautifully to create tension and drama in a familiar but fresh way. Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou does an amazing job with lettering, particularly with SFX in this issue worthy of special mention

Travis:The art within this issue and the entire series rather has been so perfect in capturing the aura of Witcher. The small villages and their details draw you into the panels as if you
were seeing it in first person. The coloration really provides an assist in bringing out those minute details you might have overlooked if this was an all-black and white art concept. With that being said the art is so well done that this series could also be spectacular as a black, white and red style.

The lettering for this book is spot on as well! Separation of styles helps you to distinguish who is saying what within the panels!

Final Thoughts

Shawn: 9.5/10 The Witcher: Blood Stone #3 continues a successful run from this creative team. The art is gorgeous. The story is both imaginative and familiar. Everything about this issue is great and I find myself lamenting that it’s the penultimate issue of the series.

Travis: 9.5 /10 This is issue three of a small four-part mini-series. And there has been so much that has
taken place within these three issues. This issue helps bring the story over the hump of the climax and prepares this story for its decent to the ending. Amazing read, amazing visual displays within the panels and pages. Over-all a very well-rounded book that should find its way into many comic book collections.

Overall Grade 9.5/10

“Smile: For The Camera #2” – Twists, Blood, Action!

Catching Up

In the previous issue of “Smile: For The Camera” we were introduced to our group as they were unaware of the ride ahead. Veterinary student Ivy enters the world of fashion, the new blood looking for a way to pay off college, meeting sleazebags and fellow models along the way. Though, as she comes to find out, she’s getting way more than she had bargained for as the bodies begin to pile up.

Smiling From Ear to Ear

Much like the first issue, the writing from Hannah Rose May continues to be phenomenal. In my last review, I had mentioned that her writing makes me not want to leave this twisted world; this second issue proves why. Here, we follow a different character from the friend group, Freja. It’s through her that we’re introduced to one of the Smile Demon’s powers, which is that it passes itself onto whoever witnessed the previous death. Through this, Rose May plays with not just the reader’s expectations but what we think we see. As someone who’s reviewed plenty of horror comics, this was one of the few that left me on edge for that reason alone.

Something else that I took note of in this issue as well was the pacing. Here, it felt very on point, in that as Freja was feeling more frantic, the pacing picked up. Now this could just be me having felt that, but it lent itself to the story beautifully. Not once did I feel the story was dragging. As Freja’s mind was racing, so was mine, making me feel in her place.

Art to Die For

As what seems to be a regular thing for this series, we’re treated to a MySpace-type social media splash on the first page, detailing the character readers we are following in the issue. However, something I forgot to mention in my previous review is that this is a way to help us get to know these characters. Miriana Puglia, Dearbhla Kelly and Brian Kolek have so far done a great job at making each one feel unique to the character.

Now being that this is a horror book, Puglia and Kelly excelled at the sudden shots of violence. Each time felt like a flash, PTSD calling back to a traumatic event you can’t move past. The violence here is intense and gruesome, and their work makes sure to leave it lasting days after reading. Not only that, but the excellent use of facial expressions makes you feel fear & sympathy simultaneously and in spades. Fear when you see a smile, sympathy when you don’t. Flipping everything on its head in stellar fashion.

Final Thoughts – 9/10

If I didn’t say it before, I’ll say it now, “Smile: For The Camera” more than proves that Hannah Rose May needs to be considered as one of the greats in horror comics. Issue #2 keeps up the energy left from the start and doesn’t hold back. She’s taking chances, and the art & colors of Puglia and Kelly follow through. This run so far is an absolute must read for any horror enthusiast.

The Story:

The team is caught in a tough spot after Boom-Boom’s incident at the end of last issue left her on death’s door. All fingers are pointing to Archangel as the guilty party. But, is he really to blame or just a pawn in a larger game?

The Writing:

Tim Seeley really ramped up the stakes in this issue. While the rest of the series has been dealing with smaller threats in order to discover the future assassin, this issue brought out the big guns and Seeley’s script delivered that reveal perfectly! The characters and team dynamic is so wonderfully handled in this book, with every member given complex motives and ideals. With a team book, it is easy to allow one character to be the focus while letting the others fade into supporting players. However, what has been so fantastic in this book is Seeley’s ability to give every member of the team time to shine and develop within the team dynamic.

Inglorious X-Force #4 – Cover – Philip Tan & Rain Beredo (Credit Marvel Comics)

The Art:

Philip Tan steps in on art duties this issue and, while I enjoyed it I have to say that the change in style was a bit jarring. Tan’s artwork harkens back to the early days of X-Force and there is something timeless and nostalgic about it. The action and set pieces looked wonderful and Romulo Fajardo Jr.’s colors popped with Tan’s line work. However, having been used to Michael Sta. Maria’s work on this series, the art style in this issue took a little getting used to. One thing I can say for certain is that the cover to this issue is absolute perfection!

Overall Grade: 9.5/10

While the story is going in places I did not expect it to go in, the change up of artist threw me for a loop. I enjoyed the art and I’m loving the story overall and I cannot wait to see where this book goes next!

After returning home to Russia, Magik and Colossus encountered ancient demons from Russian folklore. Writing

Megan: Ashley Allen continues to knock it out of the park with the third issue of Magik and Colossus. In the second issue, Magik had a plan that Colossus wasn’t privy to, and he absolutely hated that. Magik was kidnapped, and it was up to Colossus to find his sister. In this issue, we see that nothing will stop Colossus from finding her, even if it means lying to a bartender to find the people responsible for her kidnapping. Meanwhile, Magik is being put through a trial of fights that are designed to tire her out and make her use her magic. The problem with her magic is that there’s a draining spell active, and if Magik uses her magic, she will be drained.

In Magik and Colossus #3, we see the brother and sister come together open-heartedly, saying exactly the right things the other needs to hear. Ashley Allen has such a talent when writing these magical characters, but her true talent shows in the heart she gives these characters.

Shawn: This series is shaping up to be one of the best things Ashley Allen has ever written. The ability to combine serious action with heartfelt moments is just an amazing bit of narration. I was sold on this series as soon as I saw it because I saw what Allen did with the Magik series, but this series is so much more. Allen has built on what she started in her Magik run and now includes a more dimensional, deeper version of Colossus than we are used to seeing.

Allen truly makes readers feel the weight that Piotr has carried around. You feel like, despite all that he has learned from both his brother and Illyana, that Piotr still feels like he hasn’t done enough to take care of her. If writers for a generation have crafted Doctor Strange as a victim of his own hubris, Allen shows us the opposite side of the coin in Piotr, a man who can’t take pride in his own accomplishments.

Art

Megan: Germán Peralta gives us some downright beautiful panels in the comic, which isn’t a surprise given how incredibly talented he is. Alongside him is Arthur Hesli and Ariana Maher, who both add to the gorgeous artwork that’s from start to finish when reading Magik and Colossus #3. Arthur Heslie is one of the best in the coloring business, and he shows this time and time again. With his coloring and Peralta’s drawings, you see a mystical adventure that keeps your eyes locked into the page. Ariana Maher provides her fantastic lettering that illustrates the tone of the comic perfectly, while giving sound effects that put the reader right into the middle of the story.

Shawn: Just when I think the team of Germán Peralta and Arthur Hesli can’t get any better, they do. This is a gorgeous issue. I’m continuously blown away by the attention to detail both give to even the backgrounds of each panel.

Baby Illyana is perhaps just the most adorable thing I’ve seen in this series so far, and you can feel Magik’s relationship with Colossus through the art. That is perhaps the best praise I can give the visual team on this series.

Every issue, every panel is so full of emotion that even if Ariana Maher wasn’t doing some of the best work in lettering she’s done, you could feel the emotion. The art alone creates a genuine connection between the Rasputin siblings, and it’s perfect.

Final Thoughts

Megan: 10/10. Ashley Allen does it again and continues the incredible story of the brother and sister duo who can only depend on each other. This story has action, it has a fantastic plot, and a whole lot of heart.

Shawn: 10/10. This is one of my absolute favorite series out right now. I love the relationship that we see between these two. Colossus’s metal skin feels both literal and metaphorical. The story is delightful and at times heartwarming. The plot twist at the end was a great one.

Overall Grade 10/10

SPOILERS AHEAD

The Story:

Dan packs a lot of emotion into this issue, and one that hits home for me as a father. Jon Kent is lost and afraid unknowing his own potential through his abilities. Tomorrow Man helps him realize what he can do and tries to help the citizens of Smallville understand he is alone and scared. I love how this is a narrative and emotionally driven issue between Tomorrow Man, who is Jon Kent, and seeing himself as a child. The issue does end with a bit of a head tilting moment with Damien not trusting him at all and Batman showing approval, which leads us to think there is something not quite right on the horizon.

The Art and Letters:

Giuliano and Lucas bring this issue to life vibrantly and beautifully. They capture young Jon’s emotions brilliantly. His face is terrified, and you can feel how scared he is as all he wants to do is go home. Even though Tomorrow Man has a mask on, the lettering by Dave seeps his sympathy through his tone and how soft spoken he is. I love the look of Tomorrow Man as well; it is different and colorful and not something we expect to see from the Superman lineage.

Final Thoughts:

Superman Unlimited #12 reunites Jon Kent with Lois and packs an emotional punch through time and space. The art is gorgeous from panel to panel, and Dan is setting up something with Damien and Bruce that will give you just a slight pause.

Overall Grade: 9/10

The Story

This comic review is brought to you by the dynamic duo of Megan and Shawn!

Shawn – Eve L Ewing does a really good job setting up this story. I was really curious about the inclusion of Captain America in the story, but Ewing did so in a way that makes sense. I think the thing that I love about this, but that also makes me uneasy, is to see Scott Summers put in this place. The part that makes me uneasy about all of this is Scott being inevitably proven right is much of an X-Men trope as corny jokes are a Spider-Man trope. I love the new dynamics that Graymatter Lane brings to this story. I can’t wait to see where we go from here. I love that Ewing crafts a version of Beast that instantly makes me uncomfortable

Megan – X-Men United #2 has a little bit of everything you’d want in the continuation from the first issue. We see Scott’s jealousy rage on as he tries to pull a fast one over Emma, which shows where his priorities lie. We get to see the different dynamics through mutants who normally wouldn’t work together. Plus, we get to see a team up and these mutants and Captain America that leaves off on a very interesting cliffhanger.

What I love about Eve Ewing’s writing is how effortlessly she’s able to have so many different big personalities in a scene together, and they still shine in their own right. With Emma, Kitty, Prodigy, and Iceman working as a team together, each of their personalities is on full display without watering down the others. The team that’s working alongside Captain America has the same magic to their dynamics as well.

The Art

Shawn – Just another absolutely beautiful issue from Tiago Palma. The lines are absolutely beautiful. It’s one thing to have Ewing come up with the idea of Graymatter Lane, but it’s Palma, along with colors from Brian Reber, that bring it to life. I appreciate that Palma is skilled enough and cares enough about his craft to bring actual details to panels that feature burning buildings. It would be really easy to bury everything in smoke and fire, but Palma shows adept attention to detail, even outlining columns and woodwork in the background. Reber does a beautiful job with colors in this issue. Emma Frost walking through fire is a beautifully drawn and immaculately colored panel. Joe Sabino ensures that the story flows while allowing readers a full view of the art

Megan – There’s simply no losing with this creative team, and this second issue proves just that! Tiago Palma, Brian Reber, and Joe Sabino all bring something to United X-Men #2 that makes it an outstandingly beautiful comic. It’s becoming very clear that Tiago Palma just doesn’t miss when he’s the artist of the comic. Tiago sets the tone immediately with a fiery scene that instantly grabs your attention. The character’s emotions shine brightly and clearly through their facial expressions, most notably Emma Frost.

Alongside Tiago is Brian Reber, who handles the colors of the comic. Tiago and Brian work so well off each other, with the details being highlighted excellently with the colors. United X-Men #2 is a beautiful mix of vibrancy and dark details, and makes the panels practically pop off the page. Joe Sabino wraps the comic in a perfect bow with his work on the lettering, capturing the emotions of the characters and creating an excellent flow of dialogue throughout the comic.

Final Thoughts

Shawn – 9/10. Ewing and Co follow up a really strong first issue with a solid second issue. If the ideal comic leaves you with a cliffhanger and gives you one poster-worthy panel minimum, then this one checks the boxes. I like the direction this story is taking and can’t wait to see where it comes out.

Megan – 10/10. We see some really great team-ups, excellent dynamics, and a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. But what really drives this home is the artwork that’s provided by the excellent creative team.

Overall Grade – 9.5/10

The Story

Lobo is back in his new life, and Skottie Young shows the pros and cons of being a star! Continuing his new life of being a superstar with Omni Omega+ Entertainment Corp, it’s time for Lobo to suit up and start his new reality show. They put Lobo in a new suit, which he isn’t pleased with, and take him on his first bounty. Little did Lobo know, it wouldn’t be so cut and dry as it usually is when handling a bounty the way he normally would. Lobo realizes the bad parts of being a reality star.

Skottie Young continues Lobo’s story, and there’s no word to describe this other than “fun”. Lobo himself is a fun character, but Young can write him a story that has the perfect balance between humor and action. With mannerisms and sayings that are so authentically Lobo, it was an absolute blast to read him being censored by his bosses. I’m very excited to see what Skottie Young has in store for the next issue!

The Art

Jorge Corona, Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and Nate Piekos come together to make this second issue of Lobo a wild read in the best way possible. Corona provides so many intricate details to each page, which pushes the feeling of chaos even further than Lobo himself could. Beaulieu makes each page full of vibrancy and works really well off of Corona’s detail work. Piekos handles the lettering and provides excellent sound effects that make you feel like you’re in the story, witnessing it all for yourself. Together, the artists knocked this out of the park!

Final Thoughts

Lobo #2 is a crazy, fun time that continues the excitement Skottie Young set up in the first issue.

Overall Grade – 9/10

GODZILLA INFINITY ROAR #3: The Battle of Asgard!

Godzilla’s war on the cosmos rages on, bringing him to Asgard as the battle for Asgard has begun! Meanwhile, Knull has snuck away to enact his true plan, and Doom has entered to fold with a secret plan of his own.

SPOILERS AHEAD

The Story:

Gerry is throwing every villain, every hero, and even the kitchen sink at Godzilla, and we are still standing tall! We finally find out Knull’s true intentions in this issue, which is to poison the tree of life and bring silence to the universe once and for all. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this issue is how Doom is now fitting into the picture. Until now, he has been sidelined and waiting to be brought in. Gerry has him meeting the Ancient One, setting as he blames Richards once more for the universe’s issue. Another aspect that made this book a ton of fun for me is how Gerry brings Beta Ray Bill into the picture! Seeing him and Thor teaming up injected so much excitement into this issue as they took on Godzilla, and I would kill to see more of these two in action.

The Art and Letters:

The artwork is beautiful as ever, with bursts of life, as the way Rainbow Bridge is brought to life in this story, the battle of Asgard takes place, and chaos ensues. Knull’s black and red fills the panels as well, which I love to see as it contrasts against the vibrancy of heroic costumes and beyond. Godzilla’s design is still a detailed love letter to Toho and their original design, which always makes me smile, as he resembles a puppy in some panels, as drawn by Ig. The art and letters are a cosmic entity of their own in this issue!

Final Thoughts:

Godzilla Infinity Roar #3 reveals the true intentions of the terrifying Knull, who seeks to end the cosmos and bring about the destruction of the universe! Our heroes are distracted by Godzilla while he works in the shadows, and our only hope may now be Doom!

Overall Grade: 9/10

PREVIOUSLY ON TIGRESS ISLAND #1:

Previously, 5 ladies traveled to China for a new career opportunity. They came from all over the world: Japan, Australia, the USA, and even Russia. Regardless of their different backgrounds, careers, talents, or motivations, they all had one thing in common: they were all out of options. As a result, they found themselves hired by one “agent/marketer” named Olmsted. So, the job offered by Olmsted was described as “companionship services for upscale locations and/or events”.

TRAFFICKED

Unfortunately, it was all a ruse. The ladies: Delight, Bridget, Lonni, Yulia, and Hema became victims of human trafficking. After their business meeting with Olmsted, they all woke up in a dark container being transported to an unknown location. Undoubtedly, this was a shock for all of them. Certainly, this was no longer the escorting services they signed up for.

WELCOME TO TIGRESS ISLAND

Once they landed, they came face to face with their new reality. Along with the person in charge of their “wellbeing”. Her name? Sorinah and she’s the Provost of the island. Big baddie in more ways than one that handles the women with an iron fist for the trafficking enterprise of one Maximo Alameda II. Finally, after the ladies tried to plead for their freedom, they were shown their accommodations. Finally, the ladies saw firsthand how big this enterprise was and how many other women fell victim to it prior to their arrival.

Now, on issue #2, there’s a lot to process. First, we see the ladies confront Vanessa, their unexpected companion. Apparently, Vanessa was not supposed to be trafficked with everyone else. Because she dated Olmsted, she thought herself safe from sharing this fate with the rest of the escorts. However, the likelihood that Olmsted sold Vanessa out by mistake is slim to none. 

REVOLT

Eventually, the newly arrived ladies were strong-spirited and unwilling to accept this injustice. So, they asked around, gathered as much intel as possible, spoke up, and demanded their human rights to be respected. But all of it fell on deaf ears. In fact, some of them were punished for speaking out of line. On the other hand, the other prisoners actively tried to stop them from making trouble. Most of them were unwilling to join their efforts because they had accepted their fates and adjusted to their new lives as sex slaves.

HOW ABOUT THE ART?

Unlike mainstream comic book series, Tigress Island does not shy away from the inherent sexuality of its characters. In spite of the story dealing with sex workers and what have you, EPHK’s art style creates space for the levity. Of course, sex trafficking is a serious matter, but when you depict women with unrealistic body proportions, you tend to relax your shoulders and allow the story to be told.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

FINAL THOUGHTS

Initially, this series could be perceived as gratuitously sexy for no reason. Especially when considering what the main plot is about. If you have been paying close attention to the news cycle for the past year or so, you’ll realize the parallels with Tigress Island and another very infamous island that we’re not going to mention here today. However, there’s some depth and complexity in these characters that’s worth exploring. If you’re looking for some ridiculous, sexy ladies to fight back against their captors, in a story where no one is innocent, Tigress Island might be the sort of NSFW content you didn’t know you were looking for.

Invincible Season 4 Episode 7 Review: Thragg’s New Era Begins?

This is when everything comes to a really emotional war. As the audience, we knew that Mark (voiced by Steven Yeun) was going into this war with a level head. Mark uses his tablet to record a heartfelt message to Eve (voiced by Gillian Jacobs), explaining this will be a “just in case” video to her. Mark still does not know Eve is pregnant. In the back of my mind, I am wondering how and when Mark will find out. It’s really cool though, because Oliver (voiced by Christian Convery) will be an Uncle, and Nolan (voiced by J.K. Simmons) will be a grandfather. Who knows what kind of special powers that the child will have? It seems that the unborn baby will be in the same predicament as Mark.

This episode is brutal, with Thragg (voiced by Lee Pace), who now seems to have total power over all of the Viltramites.  Thragg is probably the most brutal villain that I have ever seen. He was described in many episodes as the most ruthless person, and he leads with an iron fist. During this episode, I was on the edge of my seat. Really wondering if Invincible and his crew can actually win this. Not that anyone is not strong, because Nolan, Oliver, and Mark are very strong. I don’t want to give too much away, but this episode is quite emotional. I was worried going into it, and was stunned during the final few moments that were shown. I now know the extent of the Viltramite power, and I’m still rooting for the people who want to end this war.

Once again, this storytelling is top-tier. Most animated shows are not as crafted as Invincible is. It is in a way where the pacing is solid, and I am never bored. I still am really afraid of Thragg and possibly what he is capable of. There is one moment in the episode where I was surprised at what he did. It definitely was out of his character, but I was really relieved. Hopefully, the season finale can answer more of the questions that this episode set up. My final question to all of this is: What is Thragg about to do?
