Following the recent comic, SUPERNATURAL Special: Wayward, Sam and Dean have gone their separate ways. This is Dean’s side quest. Like all insane stories, it begins in Florida.

The Story for SUPERNATURAL: DEAN WINCHESTER #1
We kick off this story in Okefenokee swamp right on the Florida/Georgia line. A romantic evening in the swamp quickly turns bad. In true Supernatural fashion, it’s of course much more than meets the eye. After our what the hell was that monster intro, we cut to Dean in a motel doing what he does best: worrying about Sam. After they went their separate ways, Dean has done nothing but worry, and drink. His drinking lands him in a spot that seems just perfect for him.
A new friend, a cheeseburger, and some pie, and Dean’s ready to hunt again. Of course, right as he’s ready to hit the road, new information comes to light.

The Art
We got swampland, Mardi Gras, alligators, monsters, and Dean Winchester in his underwear. The art beautifully kicked off this creepy and fun “monster of the week” story. As a born and raised Floridian (not the crazy kind), my favorite scenes were in the swamp. The creepiness of the monster’s eyes and grin against the sparkle the water gets when the sun hits it just right set such a fun and supernatural tone for this story. All to then be thrown into Mardi Gras. The art really captured the two sides of Dean: creepy and party. I absolutely loved it!

Final Thoughts
I’m a sucker for most things Supernatural, and I’m definitely a sucker for Dean Winchester. This comic perfectly portrayed that 2005/2006 Dean. From his attire to the way he talks to strangers, his diet, and his constant worry for Sammy. It really felt like a story from the early Supernatural days. I absolutely cannot wait to see where this story takes us as Dean heads to the Sunshine State!

Overall Grade: 9/10
Gators, monsters, mystery, and Dean Winchester. What more could you want? This comic did a fantastic job kicking off a new case, while still reminding us there is a bigger story at hand with both brothers. You don’t need to read everything that came before to enjoy this story (but it never hurts). We’re on a new case, with a new monster to hunt. One with some fun lore behind it, and I can’t wait to see how it all goes. Dean has work to do.
