The Story

MORE FROM NERD INITIATIVE HERE!

Quoth the Raven…Whatever #1 brings all the spooky vibes you need to get into the Halloween spirit. With eight stories that lean heavily into the darker mystic side of the DC Universe, there’s something in here for everyone to love. Whether it’s Raven teaming up with John Constantine or Deadman, or Swamp Thing, there’s plenty to choose from here, but personally, I think each story was fantastic. The writer team on Quoth the Raven… Whatever #1 is absolutely stacked, so you know it’s a guarantee that there’s going to be many excellently written stories that are all completely different from each other. There are a few stories that I want to see continue, like Vixen in Anansi’s Web, written by Domo Stanton. The other stories are complete, and even with them being short stories, they feel like a complete comic in their own right.

I loved that there was an emphasis on Constantine in a few of the stories, whether it was him and Raven teaming up, him and Zatanna, or even Superboy Prime using him as a Halloween costume inspiration. Each time Constantine was used, he brought something special to the story, and you get to see him used in very different ways.

Together, the writers created an exciting one-shot that brings together the spookiness of the DC Universe with characters that just don’t get talked about enough. Each one of these stories could be its own standalone comic, and they all meshed perfectly together in Quoth the Raven… Whatever #1.

The Art

The artwork in each story is vastly different from the others with each story perfectly capturing the spirit of the comic. Some stories are more grounded while others rely on the mystic arts quite a bit, which is illustrated beautifully each time. Super Satanic Panic is one that’ll leave a shiver down your spine, doing a fantastic job at capturing the horror aspect of the story featuring Raven and Constantine. Fear Knowing featuring Doctor Thirteen and Traci Thirteen gives you a false sense of security in thinking anything can be explained through since but quickly goes down a haunting path, which the artists build up perfectly with excellent linework and details that allow the heightened emotions speak for themselves. With how many incredibly talented artists are involved with this comic, it’s guaranteed that each story will have it’s own vibe accompanied with some pretty incredible artwork.

Final Thoughts

Quoth the Raven… Whatever #1 is, it’s the perfect way to get into the spooky season spirit! Each writer and artist brings their talents to center stage and gives 8 excellent stories featuring characters we just don’t get to see enough of.
